I have been searching the forums all over this site and others and haven't come across a problem similar to mine. Here's my conundrum:

I have roughly 155k miles on my 2g Eclipse GS, I had the transmission replaced in Sept last year and recently I have been having problems shifting into gear, both while I am moving and at a dead stop. While I'm driving, sometimes it doesn't even go into gear, I try to double clutch and that doesnt work so I put in in neutral, let off the clutch for a second or few and try again and it works. It diesn't matter which gear, it has happened for all of them and it's very frustrating when I'm trying to put it into first gear at a red light about to turn green and it won't go in.

From my knowledge (I am somewhat savvy with cars) I'm pretty sure I need a new clutch, given the amount of miles on my car. I didn't have it done with the transmission because the mechanic (who is a family friend) changed his price, twice, during the 3 weeks that he had my car and I was already tight on money. Advice is greatly appreciated.

Master and/or slave cylinder could be going bad. Or if they are leaking it could cause engagement issues. Check the fluids if you are able to. Was a new clutch put in when you had the tranny swapped or was it the same clutch?

You said the tranny was replaced right? With a new one? old one? Did you know the condition of this tranny before it was put in?

I just checked the clutch res and its full, there isn't a dipstick for the transmission fluid so I don't know how much is in there, I'm off on monday so I will get some gear oil and change it. Any recommendations for transmission fluid? I am leaning towards the Ams Oil gear lube 75W-90

The original clutch is still installed and the transmission is rebuilt, the place I bought it from is HIGHLY recommended, I asked a baskillion people about their transmissions from there and I have never heard a bad review. It has been performing perfectly until a few days ago.

Also, my reverse light is out, I looked from under the rear bumper and it doesn't look easily accessible from there, so I'm assuming I have to remove the paneling in the trunk to access it?

Check to see if ## clutch is dragging by putting it in first gear, then reving the motor to like 6 or 7k without releasing the clutch pedal. If you're car moves, then your clutch is dragging. You need to adjust the clutch assembly (master cylinder rod, if its the same as my gsx). I hope your tranny is still okay after all thus if it is dragging. I was lucky enough to catch mine before I ruined my tre stg 2. Dragging clutches ruin synchros. Other than that, I would have to say the clutch might be bad.

I tried your suggestion Tiki and the car didn't move. I called around and found a shop to insatall a new clutch for me. I'm pretty sure the synchros are fine since it only refuses to shift about 20% of the time and I'm pretty careful with my car in general.

I still have one question, for my transmission fluid has anyone used the AmsOil 75W-90 Trans Gear Lube?

AMSOIL Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90

Reach your hand under the dash on the drivers side and see if there is any fluid on the clutch master cylinder boot. If there is any, you may have a leak. May not be real low on fluid but it can suck air into the system and create a similar problem.
