Hey guys i recently got a DSM a 98 gsx eclipse about 6 months ago. I am trying to do alittle work on it so i can start driving it as my first car. I am also new to DSMtuners and loving it so far!

But heres the problem i am having. I was searching for an answer but couldnt find anything exactly or really to close to my problem. When i start up my car, if i try to put it into reverse it wont go. I got to put it into first then back into reverse to go. ( I got a 5 speed BTW). Also i notice when i am driving and put it into a new gear it makes a wierd almost like a binging sound when i get it into that gear. It doesn't grind or pop out however it doesnt slide into the gear smooth either. But it doesn't happen everytime. It usually happens from first into second but it has happened other gears as well.

I brought it to a mechanic. ( not for this reason however) but he checked my transmission fluid and he said it looks good. I am not sure if it the clutch? But i would think it would do it in other gears and more contuniously.

I highly appriate any help or advice you guys will give! Thanks!

Sounds like syncros. but something obviously caused them to go bad.... how does the cluth feel? if its dragging you will ruin syncros.

The clutch feel fine i guess. It hasnt changed since i got the car. I feels pretty stiff though. Not sure if thats normal for it or not because its the first and only manual i have ever drove.

Well I don't know what shape ## slave or master cylinder is in or clutch. But to me it sounds like sink rolls in the transmission are starting to take a shit ud have to get a new Tran. Is ## clutch pedlle losing presure do u have to pump it up or keep adding fluid? If its one of those two things it could be the clutch not fully disengaging making it make those horrifying sounds. Hope this helps let me know

I don't really know how informed are you about these cars, but the stiff clutch may be because you have a racing clutch. Secondly, is this sound a grinding sound or is it just a noise. The previous owner may have installed metal skateboard bushing onto your shifter cables, and/or metal shifter baseplate bearings (which is a good thing). If it is hard to get into gear and the sound is a grinding noise, your synchros are shot and you need a rebuild and or your clutch is dragging (adjust it under the dash at the master cylinder). The stiff shifting may be because of a binding shifter or you may have an aftermarket short shifter, and sometimes the stiff shifts are just apart of DSM trannies. Also, the first gear to reverse is just the gear locking you out, happens quite a bit to our transmissions and in many others, go from first to Reverse or double clutch (works best).

WHAT!?!?

HE DOESN'T NEED A NEW TRANNY!!!!

He needs to follow the advice on checking his linkage and master/slave.
If all of that checks out he would then need a rebuild.

Please think about what advice you give.

Thanks for all the responce guys. From my understanding when igot my car it was all stock beside a cold air intake. The noise isnt a grinding noise it just isnt smooth shift into some gears and it makes alittle binging sound when i get it into that gear. Thanks for all the advice ill be looking at it alittle more this weekend or so.

Get us pics of underneath the shift boot, like all of the shifter goodies and in the engine bay where the shift cables connect to the tranny
