I figured out that my problem is simply that the select cable is about an inch too long. I put a 90 trany in a 90 gsx. Did they make a different style 90? Because the old 90 tranny that I pulled out worked fine, and now the new one needs a new select cable.

What should I do? Can I modify the cable that I have now or do I need a new one? Where should I go to get this? Junk yard? Thanks !

There should be adjustment on the cable so you can lengthen/shorten it.

it is a manual. There is of course an adjustment below the center counsel. I made it as short as possible and it is still to long.

Thanks!

check the arm lengths on the trans that the cables mount to. some of them have 2 shorter arms, while some have one short and one long and some have 2 long arms. compare both of your transmissions. however, only the upper arm is removable easliy. i'ts held on by a 12mm nut covered by a rubber insulator. if those are different, swap them. mitsu made the cables and tranny's so that they have to match. also, look at the bracket on the trans that the cables mount on. there were two variations of it. one was almost horizontal and one was on an angle. make sure both of yours are the same, if not, swap the original one onto the new trans.

Yep.

There were two different styles of shifter cable retainer brakets. Just take it off your old tranny and bolt it to the new one.

yeah, i checked all that, i swapped the select lever already, and the other brackets looked identical, so I didn't swap them. I guess I will swap them anyways and I'll let you know what happened.

Also make sure that braket isn't turned 180* around, because that places cables much closer to select levers. If you still need more adjustment, you can remove rubber bushings/spacers that holt that braket, get two pairs of washers and use large mounting holes in the braket to move it around. Then simply tighten it in desired position.

okay, I swapped the select lever and the bracket, they were the same exact piece. This didn't help. I called the mitsu dealership and the guy said that I have the exact right tranny that I need for my car. He said it should just drop right in and everything should line up.

^Where can I see a picture of how the bracket should be....I was wondering if it was flipped arroung 180*.

thanks.... I'm desperate here, I have a car sitting in my garage that nobdy can figure out. I don't know what I'm going to do

p.s. there is only one way to adjust the cables right? (from under the center counsel)

ok, well my bracket was on the opposite of that picture. I tryed reversing it and it would not go. Even if it would go, the cables were so far out of place that they would not slip onto the levers.

Which way is letter 'S', that's stamped on your braket facing, towards the engine, or pass. side?

I don't know because I am at work, but the way the pic is, the curve on the bottom of the bracket fits in where it bolts up. Mine was the ooposite, it was bolted on and then it curved away from the trany...instead of toward the tranny. You get what I mean? I'm wondering if the bracket that attatches to the cables is also on backwards?

okay, thanks guys I got this figured out.....

That bracket was on backwards, as well as the bracket that holds the cables. (which I don't understand because it worked on the old tranny) I think the thing that did it, was that I swapped the part that holds the select lever to the tranny.

Thanks very much, especially the pic form newlogics....I appreciate it.
