How long to pull an engine and tranny

Hey all,

I am just curious how long it takes one of you guys to pull an engine with the tranny? I'd be doing a 2g gsx, using a cherry picker and a load leveler. I just pulled the tranny alone and it wasn't that bad, but I almost thought it'd be the same amount of time to just pull it with the engine. I was just curious. Some day I might want to do a 6bolt/built tranny swap. I am assuming it is easy just to have them bolted together and drop them in as one unit. Fill me in, thanks!
 
It really depends on how much experience you have pulling engines. I find it easier to drop the transmission first, then disconnect the harness, then pull the engine out. I'm not sure an AWD trans would fit coming out the top still bolted on the motor, I had a hard time pulling a FWD one in one of my 1g's. I doubt they would go back in bolted together, the top transmission mount is always a pain in the ass. If you were to remove the crossmember and angle the motor & trans in you might be able to get away with it, but I've never tried it. The first time I had everything pulled it took around 6 hours with the help of a couple friends, and we dropped the trans from the bottom. For some reason axles are always difficult for me!
 
On a fully stock car, we can pull the engine with tranny in 43 min with 2 guys, but we have done it quite a bit, and this is if everything comes loose fine. In my race car, which has far less items in the engine bay and quick disconnect everything, including wiring, it takes just over 30 minutes to pull the setup.
 
Like said, depends on experience, also tools. I've dropped my engine and tranny in half a day easy, install it in a few extra house because I take steps to make sure everything is clean and I coat every single bolt and nut so it has less of a chance of freezing on me next time I take it off.

Figure if it's your first time, take your damn time with it, learn where everything is, MARK WHERE EVERYTHING IS WITH TAPE AND ZIPLOCK BAGS (for your bolts), and just tackle it over the week.

Wooo buddy, can you find everything after you throw it behind you? 43 minutes is doing this way too much! ;)
 
ive bolted an ACT up and put a tranny in in about 15-20 mins but pulling evrything in 30, mad props man.

I figured it'd come out pretty quick that way. In fact, if the car was jacked up and you got enough tilt on it, it should have lots of room. Or so I would think.

I wasn't thinking I could do it in 43 minutes, but probably under a couple hours if everything broke free easily.

You should be able to Pull it fairly quick last time I pulled the the motor/trans together, I did it in about 4-5 hours myself will drinking and BBQ'in and without a load leveler and still had the ABS in...
 
Usually about an Hour and a half to two hours if you know whats up and have a gorilla sized friend. Thats pulling the Motor + trans out of a 1g AWD in fully stock trim. However, if it is your first time, don't plan on less than 3 or 4 hours, inevitably something wont go as planned. Also note: DSM rust is quite possibly the strongest material on the planet -> get a good breaker bar for axle nuts and such.
 
Seem like all you guys pull your engines/trannys from the top.
I drop everything out the bottom. I've put 2 clutches in my spyder and I dropped the tranny out the bottom while leaving the engine in.

I dropped the motor and trans out the bottom of my colt as a unit, with nothing but a floorjack.
 
Well I did mine by myself in about 3-4 hours my first time. Make sure you get some cheap ziplock bags and a sharpie and lable them with every bolt you take off. Also with alot of bolts you can take the part off and then put the bolt back where it went.....I pulled the motor fromt he top with no leveler. I pulled the tranny was well with it...It's really not that hard that way I don't know why so many people act like it is hard to pull them together it's really not even with a/c and cruise still in there...The one nice thing about leaving in the tranny is you don't have to fool with any of the suspension/cv joints which are sometimes a major pita.....not sure how hard it would be to unbolt the tranny though so i guess it's your call
 
If I am not around my lift, I deffinatly pull them out together from above. On the race car, there really isnt much there, I unscrew 1 connector on the fire wall for wiring, and the starter wires, and pull the quick disconnects for the fuel. Its very easy on the race car cause you can get to and see everything very easy.

On stock cars, the hood comes off first. I usually have someone loosening the motor mounts while I unbolt the lower arms from the spindel, I pop the axles out of the trans, and then we dump the fluids, pull the lines and radiator, undo the stock wiring, drop the sxhaust and unbolt the transfer case, pull the puppy out. I have a organized tray that is labled for a dsm engine pull. Like working on anything though, sometimes you will have a few snags. Its also easier to get it out if the intake manifold and turbo setup is off, but it can be done with both on.
