while driving my freshly painted 1991 laser 1.8 liter 5 speed (first dsm LOL with 170xxx miles the oil pressure dropped and car died...now i believe the motor is seized :ohdamn:....im a poor high school kid so i ether need to find a cheap swap or shes going to a bone yard....i really cant see this car go its in way to good of shape....so i was basically wondering what motors would all drop in nice....my brother ( major dsm guy) believes a 2g motor or a 2.0m will only fit if i put the tranny to? so if some one could let me no what i can put in so i no what to look for that would be great....and i no this sounds bad but im not looking to put a huge turboed motor in it....i dont have the cash right now

It is possible, not nesserairly very cheap to swap it. Have you looked into rebuilding it? I would imagine you could buy main and rod bearings, polish hte crank and buy a new oil pump and be fine. Maybe the timing belt snapped and thats all that happed? Not sure on the time between oil lights and death.

Info about the swap

Search "90-91 ecb" & "90-91 EL" . those are the digital copies of the factory service manual, might come in useful

i no the head gasket went and it would need to me bored and new pistons so a rebuild would cost around 1200 and a lot of time....i already have a lot of time in painting the car so im looking for more of a swap but ill keep a rebuild in mind

Why is the head blown? What evidence leads to this conclusion?

You have a 80 horse 1.8. You can rering it(screw pistons),regasket it,and refresh the bearing and oil pump for a 1/3 that. The pistons may have slight slap on cold start, but nothing bad. Look on rockauto.com

I rebuilt a 2.0t for $96. That was rings, mains, rods, and all gaskets. Most was on sale. I ordered the t-belt and hg from mitsu for about $120. Total cost was ~$220. I hope a 1.8 is cheaper. I could have had the motor pulled, fixed, and reinstalled in 8 hours I'd guess. Triple that if your inexperienced, without a proper garage and power tools.

Still will take longer to swap it, it will cost more, and be unforgiving upon t-belt brakage. Oh and it will be faster LOL

Edit: That looks right. Mileage, compression? Be weary and untrusting of anything lke that. Look into the creditability and be aware of the procedure. Just trying to help avoid ant scams.

my cars the same color :.(.....but i just looked up parts on rock auto and it looks a little worse then yours....200 and up for just a ring kit :(

how much do u think ill pay for a good 1.8?.....and the newer 2.0 will fit with a different ecu and harness?

Junkyard 1.8 probably $500,and maybe a private seller will have one for $300.

2.0 needs the mounts, motor, ecu and harness. Not sure about tranny compatibility, you"ll have to check that tread out, maybe PM a few swappers.

Complet kit with a oil pump and piston is only $421.

Look for the complete kit. heres the description page as thats all i can link to.

edit heres the link:http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1205547,parttype,5316

Double edit: where did you find 200 dollar rings? most expensive are like $87, cheapest being like $39

Triple edit: oh the rering kits come with bearing and gaskets I see, not a bad option.

Perfect eh? If thats what you call a yellow dsm :p

Ik its not the best color but I painted the car for 150 dollars including the side skirts a new fender and tinted tail lights :)

You win cost. I spent 500 on clear..., and 1000 for the various white and black, primers, and filters and cups. I worked to make sure its strait, and the paint will last the rest of the cars life. What fours years till it meets a car, tree, or deer? ROFLROFL

if you want to swap it to another motor, it will cost money, time, and headache. just go to the junkyard and get another same head and block. go on a 1/2 off sale and you could get a head and block for as cheap as 100.00. I was a cheap college student and got lucky on a $500 eagle talon and a running $100 4g63t turbo motor at the junk.

just so you guys all know how its going i just pulled the old motor .....i picked up a 1.8 out of a 93 eclipse with 5xxx on a rebuild for 100 dollars .....it should be in this next week .....i will post picks then

Glad to hear that. Great price too. Swapping the same engine in is always simpler, cheaper, and easier than trying to change everything over.

Nice work on the paint job.

i i took my first run in the car today and it ran and drove great..the motor runs like new.....i will post up pics tomorrow .....but it seems my e brake or parking break stuck on after the car sat......but only the passenger side....any ideas?
