Was driving down the highway when i guess my thermostat went out (whole left side of my dash cluster died a few days before so i couldn't see my engine temp, gas, rpms). car started gushing coolant from the reservoir so i pulled over and dumped more coolant in the radiator. Started the motor thinking everything was fine like a dumbass and kept driving. Happened again but this time there was a squeel when i pulled off to the side. Like an even bigger dumbass i tried starting it because i was less than a mile away from my house (thought i could get home and diagnose from my driveway). Motor cut out and ripped off the timing belt. Im guessing the motor is seized seeing as how she won't even show any signs of wanting to turn over.

MORAL OF THE STORY IS: is it possible to rebuild this motor or is it too far gone? I really don't want to get rid of it seeing as how it's my first turbo DSM. I've herd of frankenstine motors being re-machined from the graveyard to be beast's. Wondering if i'd be so lucky...

Thanks for the help!

Really it depends on how hot it got. You could've done some serious damage, and it's hard to say until you've torn it down.

Please don't mention dsmgraveyard ever again. I don't know what "beast" motors you've seen come out of there, but if you search a bit about them, you'll find there aren't any. They're scum.

i didn't say anything about DSMgraveyard. i just said the graveyard.. as in junkyard.

My mistake. Graveyard is the only "company" that sells "Frankenstein" shortblocks, which led me to believe that's who you were referring to.

Depending on your goals you can go to advanced auto and get a spec rebuilt motor complete top to bottom like 1800 with core

Im new to this stuff so by this you mean a stock rebuilt 4g63t 6 bolt?

Saw this. not really 1800 :/ Plus it looks like a 7bolt.

So if your timing belt broke you most likely bent a few valves, not the end of the world. Your best bet is to pull the head and check the damage out. You could get away with a head rebuild or it may be so damaged you need a fresh head (hit up bogusSVO on here). Your bottom end could be ok or could need new pistons it they hit really bad. I would go thru a trusted vendor on here than some rebuild from advanced auto! But that's your money and your call.

^ Unless the belt broke as a result of the cams seizing. In that case, chances of saving the head for a reasonable cost are pretty slim. But I agree, avoid remanufactured engines from parts stores. They use cheap parts wherever they can and their experience is questionable at best. Check our list of supporting vendors and freelancers, and be sure to check their reviews.

^^ ya that's what I was trying to say, he won't know how bad it is till he pulls the head. Could be salvageable or could be total loss! Thanks for chiming in Wes just trying to give the o.p. alit guidance and the highs and lows of what to expect. Is it just me or does it seem like lately there's been alot of timing belt breakage or jumpings among the community!! :(

Before pulling the head, remove valve cover and turn each cam over by hand. Watch for valves that do not come up all the way or do not move freely (bent valves). While you'r in there do a leakdown test on the cylinders (would have to manually close all valves on each cylinder bu adjusting camshafts). The leakdown test will help you locate not only bent valves, but also any cracks that may have appeared.

If you have tried turning crankshaft over with a 1/2" ratchet and were not successful, chances are that there is severe damage to the pistons and/or cylinders. Either that, or hydrolock from a leaking head gasket.
