Hi, I am a new to posting on the forums although I have lurked around here for a while. I am looking to upgrade the turbo on my 17 y/o daughters 91 FWD Turbo Eclipse. It currently has the stock 14 series turbo on it. I am somewhat caught between the SBR-G50 from Slowboy and a 16G from an EVO. I plan to upgrade the injectors to 550cc and an AFPR as well as some type of data logger and an upgraded chip as the ECU has already been modified with a socket setup. I appreciate any info that will help me make this decision. I did a search but didn't find too much regarding this turbo with an automatic setup. Thank you again.
 
16G. You can't beat MHI reliability while remaining a 100% bolt-on turbo.

What is the desired boost level you're looking to run? If you're not going to be running 20psi, then a 50-trim shouldn't even be considered. There are plenty of other choices that work better at lower boost levels by flowing just as much air as the 50-trim while spooling a few hundred RPMs quicker.

bt i would maybe go for hx35 or a 56mm borgwarner
Not a good idea for a stockish car.
 
Why don't you stick with the 14b for now? Its capable of 300whp. Start getting some supporting mods first and push the 14b, then upgrade to something larger
 
Thanks for the input gents. If I were to go with a 16G is the one list here what I would be looking for and is it priced competively? Is there any type of different feed and or return lines needed with it? What about the "J" pipe? Thanks again.

PS - Looking for as much power as possible on pump gas reliably and well within the ragged edges.

It's starting to go as it has too much shaft play and oil is getting by the seals. So I figured if I am gonna replace it I might as well do something a little bigger. Are the 550cc injectors not enough?

^^^Agreed! a 14b with a used 16g turbine housing for cheap can pretty much max out your 550s. Jsut get another 14b for CHEAP and then get a 16g turbine housing (7cm^2) for $50 or so. Good cheap 300+ whp fun.

550s are not enough to push a small 16g let alone an evo3 16g or MUCH bigger hx35. Though the hx35 may spool very fast, don't be fooled into thinking that you'll see what it's worth in flow with even 650s
 
Does anyone make a reliable chip for the 650cc injectors? I am trying to keep this as simple as possible for her.

youll save some cash if you get it off here. also id get a pair 272cams or a pair of FP2's. also the 16g uses all the stock oil, coolant and return lines, as well as the j pipe

That's actually the setup I was running not too long ago. The 7cm housing made a nice topend difference and extra lag really wasn't noticeable. The spool is still super fast and the midrange made good power. It felt really good at 21psi all the way around!

That's actually the setup I was running not too long ago. The 7cm housing made a nice topend difference and extra lag really wasn't noticeable. The spool is still super fast and the midrange made good power. It felt really good at 21psi all the way around!

Was that 21-PSI on pump gas? If so what style/brand of intercooler or was it stock?

It's possible to do your own eprom editing using Tunerpro(free)
The bin and xdf files are in the DSMecu Yahoo group
This has some code, but with Tunerpro, you can just edit the numbers and not have to mess with the hex code

Yes, 93octane and around 20*degrees of timing up top. A/f around 10.8:1. I could have pushed further if i really wanted to. There's always E85 and more timing too!
It is actually a SSAC long route kit I bought for $150used. I believe the core is like 28x12x3. It works really well actually:rolleyes:

You can find 16G's much cheaper than DSMParts.com. Hell if you're not picky I could have a rebuilt Big 16G for you much cheaper than you'll find a new Evo III for anywhere....but I'm currently out of rebuildable Evo III 16G cores.

All of the oil supply / drain lines as well as the coolant lines from the factory 14B will fit the 16G.

The factory j-pipe (compressor discharge pipe) will work with a 16G turbo also, however most guys prefer to upgrade the j-pipe to one that is a little larger. The factory j-pipe pinches under 1-1/2" right where it exits the compressor housing.

Aftermarket upgraded j-pipes can be bought to face the passenger's side for cars with side mount intercoolers, or the driver's side for cars with front mounts.

A pair of 272 cams won't do anything for a 16G with 550's except ruin the low end. Perhaps if the OP was running 30psi or something....but keep in mind Curt Brown has gone 10.33 with an off-the-shelf Evo III 16G spinning HKS 264's.
 
I have an evo 3 on my 95 gst and the sbr g50 on my 97 talon tsi and the spoolup is about the same on both but the 50 trim makes alot more power. My gst isnt tuned as well though-(safc tune). Talon (dsmlink tune). Im running 660's for the evo 3 turbo on the gst and 880's for the g50 on the talon. Hope this helps but it really depends on your goals. I made 485 hp and 425 lb ft torque with the g50 on 100 octane tuned at 22 psi with a stock bottom end and head with zero knock and about 20deg timing at the top.:hellyeah:

Something is wrong with the 16g car if it takes as long to spool as the 50 trim.

Those were fp4R cams ;). He did 449whp with the hks 272s, from which he was reluctant to upgrade to the 4Rs. But it clearly worked out.
