Hi, I am a new to posting on the forums although I have lurked around here for a while. I am looking to upgrade the turbo on my 17 y/o daughters 91 FWD Turbo Eclipse. It currently has the stock 14 series turbo on it. I am somewhat caught between the SBR-G50 from Slowboy and a 16G from an EVO. I plan to upgrade the injectors to 550cc and an AFPR as well as some type of data logger and an upgraded chip as the ECU has already been modified with a socket setup. I appreciate any info that will help me make this decision. I did a search but didn't find too much regarding this turbo with an automatic setup. Thank you again.
 
You can find 16G's much cheaper than DSMParts.com. Hell if you're not picky I could have a rebuilt Big 16G for you much cheaper than you'll find a new Evo III for anywhere....but I'm currently out of rebuildable Evo III 16G cores.

All of the oil supply / drain lines as well as the coolant lines from the factory 14B will fit the 16G.

The factory j-pipe (compressor discharge pipe) will work with a 16G turbo also, however most guys prefer to upgrade the j-pipe to one that is a little larger. The factory j-pipe pinches under 1-1/2" right where it exits the compressor housing.

Aftermarket upgraded j-pipes can be bought to face the passenger's side for cars with side mount intercoolers, or the driver's side for cars with front mounts.



A pair of 272 cams won't do anything for a 16G with 550's except ruin the low end. Perhaps if the OP was running 30psi or something....but keep in mind Curt Brown has gone 10.33 with an off-the-shelf Evo III 16G spinning HKS 264's.

I dont agree. 272's do a great deal on a 16g powered car. Me and my bro have comparable setups and Im on stock cams. He has BC 272's. My car makes a butt load more tq down low but he has more up top.

All I know is that extra tq down low does absolutely nothing when you going WOT through the gears on the strip. All that extra tq down low wont even be used and is useless. Thats why spool is so overrated because as long as you stay in boost between gears I could care less how long it takes to spool it up. Its only a downshift away.
 
To the OP I say go with the 50 trim. The boost on a 16g builds slowly untill it hits about 10psi and then immediatly shoots too 30psi in a flash. On a FWD car this causes a lot of tq to hit the tires very fast and early causing it too loose traction easier.

A 50 trims boost builds more linear and would make it easier to get traction. Not to mention will make 30-80whp more on pump gas since it doesnt blow as much hot air.

But for reliability you cant beat the MHI Evo16g. Me and my brother are proven facts thest turbos last a long time. His 16g is over 6 years old and has ran at maximum boost (30+psi) on e85 for about 3 years and it still has zero shaft play. My turbo is about 4 years old with 2 years of max boost on e85 and no shaft play.

Jack ran a 16g on his track car with a welded flapper and logs showed boost hitting 40+psi and it ran like that for over 2 years before giving out.
