1G Rusted Rear Axle Outer End

In a lesson in buyer beware, I bought a 4 bolt axle setup from someone on here, it's had quite a few issues, including side cover damage. But, this thread isn't about that...

I went to clean up the axles and start to replace the boots when I noticed one outer cup and the axle end that mates to it were really nasty looking. I've attached a photo of the good side and the bad. The bad one is after I scraped away a lot of rusty paint-like material from the cup. Though the cup has some putting, I think it's salvageable.

The outer axle though, I'm not sure what to make of the damage. It doesn't have the machines lip, you see on the good one, that goes into the cup. Has anyone ever seen this? Should I replace it, or would people run it like that?

I'm not sure how much pressure is put on the lip, but assumed it helped center everything.I assume you can't get just the outer axle end, but if anyone knows a good source, I'm all ears

Trakmotive # MI8184 but only the passenger side whole axle is still available. I got the drivers side from O'Riellys.

Aftermarket axles don’t seem to be as strong as OEM units. Prolly best to find a used set.

But if I break one (and I will) it has a lifetime guarantee!
I also found ONE drivers rear axle for a 4 bolt for sale but it wasn't at Oriellys.

Haven't wire wheeled it, I think it will knock off the surface rust though. My main concern was whether or not the fact the inner lip being gone was an issue, whether it plays an important part of the proper function or not.

I think RTM was offering new oem units. Not cheap, but also not cheap...
I found some nice rebuilt fronts from a shop in Denver called CVJ axles. Give that a try. Not sure I’d use that rusty one if I could avoid it.

Not OEM but NEW rear AWD 1g axles are available here (Right rear - Passenger) and here (Left rear - Drivers) as of today, 07/06/2021
