Hello, my car is currently out of commision and im not sure if my issue is rod knock. I have been reading about rod knock and from what ive heard it should not really effect idle. My car will start up but it will not idle currectly, but it also sounds like crap when its running, sort of like knocking but not exactly. Any ideas would be great. thanks

UPDATE - Well whoever said bad valve was correct, the only thing I am scared about now is where the piece went, did no damage to the pistons... ANY ONE HAVE AN EXHAUST VALVE THEN CAN SEND ME??? No really, a good exhaust valve would be cool. Only other thing I noticed was that 2 cyclinder looked like they were running rich and 2 very lean. 1 and 4 looked rich and 2 and 3 looked lean. Also I guess Ill be looking to replace the turbo bc the block is supposed to have like 60kish on it but the turbo looks like it has 230k on it, its crammed with exhaust crap.

How do youknow this?

In the compressor? Is their lateral shaft play? Is the radial shaft play excessive?

i made the assumtion of the rich and lean by the spark plugs and valves look like. there doesnt seem to be shaft play but im not sure what you mean by those two types of shaft play. i tried to see if the valve chunk was in the turbo but couldnt

Your number 2 cylinder that i see looks like it's been "steam cleaned" from a blown head gasket. . . A blowout between 2-3 will make them both look similar (including valves and spark plugs). . .

Radial shaft play is the play going side to side when looking at the compressor wheel. Lateral shaft play is in-and-out when facing the compressor wheel. Radial play is much more important. It determines if thrust bearing is wore out. Does the turbo assembly spin freely? does any part of either wheel contact the housing it's in? If ye to the first and no to the second question, then LIKELY the turbo is fine.

head gasket is 100% fine, couldnt find a flaw in it, you can see the headgasket in the picture of the blown valve, no probs on that cyclinder or at all. The messed up valve caused all my problems. Ill check the turbo tomorrow. thanks
Jeremy

so the turbo looks good, both sides, going to replace all the valves, most convienient this way, my only question is how do you check to see if the valve seats are good? tried looking it up but had no luck with that

thanks
