Road Race Engineering hood vent

An update on this, I am adding some aluminum strips bonded to the edge of the vent because the extreme heat of the manifold is causing it to warp slightly. I did have heat reflector on it as well but I think it needs a layer of aluminum bonded and then heat insulated.

Ok so i have the car back and i have the vent installed so i will do the test soon as i have my darn oil leak fixed. Do you need a video or will pictures will be ok. From what i have see so far it needs to be sealed that way air is not flowing under it and disrupting the flow of the air going over the vent.

Sealing the bottom will only guarantee that it doesn't work at all. Leave it open.

I think he was talking about sealing the perimeter of the vent to the hood (like molding it in would do).

Just put some double sided foam tape along the flange area. That'll seal it well enough.

ok so its sealed but he valve cover leaks oil so this should be the last thing I need to fix cause the raiditor
had just craked two days ago so after everything is fixed I'll be ready to do the test. But I was driving when of broke and it sucked the steam and smoke right out I the hood so I'm positive that it works. But I'll do the test anyway just to show everyone else.

Well it took me way longer than I thought but I finally got a hood vent on my car and I had a chance to tuft it and go get some video today. As I thought it would the vent works as planned and has air coming out of it while I am driving.

Well the vent is almost impossible to see from inside the car so my brother stood up out the sun roof and filmed it. I guess I could have accelerated a bit softer and not shifted so hard but it was fun to scare him.

I wanted to mount the camera to the hood and get film of it from the side but it was my wifes camera and she would have killed me if it somehow fell off the car.

I'm not convinced yet. I need a way to get heated air out from under my hood at speed. The tufts in the video test were all on the upper edge of the vent. Although I saw no tufts being drawn into the vent they could've be caught in the stronger stream of air flowing over the vent. I would have attached some additional tufts to the bottom edge of the vent. If tufts attached out of the path of air flowing over the vent also showed air flowing out from under the hood I would be strongly inclined to use this hood vent. Air and heat vented from under the hood is the goal. Correct me if I'm misinformed. Props for your efforts so far I'm still looking for the thread that shows a similar test using the Greyforest mod (other than the low speed burnout pic).

I will try to find time to tuft it again this weekend with some of them lower down in the vent. I will see what I can do about steadying the camera work as well.

The unnoficial and unscientific test done was that I ran about 20 miles along the freeway with another DSM that didn't have a hood vent and when we stopped my entire hood was much cooler to the touch than his.

You guys seriously do not need to tuft it. I am 10000000% certain its low pressure on top of the hood toward the front of the car. REALLY REALLY REALLY sure.
So you're an expert and I suppose you have some kind of experience on the subject?!?!

I checked your profile. Nevermind...
I'm convinced :thumb: case closed.

Just thought I would show a cheaper hood vent. Like 15 shipped. Came with double sided tape. Works well and I like the look. Sorry dont have any real good pics. I am deployed and these were taken right before I left.

When it's molded and painted to match it looks great, but I don't know if I like the rivets showing in some of the pictures, I'd definitely want that molded.

I'm to lazy to go through all that work. I needed my coolant temps to go down due to the FMIC and this did the trick. I still need some airflow control between the FMIC and the Radiator and some Brake Ducts to really be able to beat on it in the Summer though.

Plus I think the rivets add a little bit of a hardcore, I don't give a crap racer look to it. Then again I also really like primered or flat black muscle cars so I'm a bit of a redneck.

Question along the same lines. Would there be benefits from placing a smaller vent towards the rear passenger side of the hood? Thinking of going that route cause I like additions that dont stand out as much :)

It all depends where exactly. some places on the hood will be high pressure and others low depends greatly on the shape of the vent as well and as if it will function as an extractor or an intake?

It does extract air. (This was one of the few times that Defiant dug his heels in and was wrong.) The math says it extracts air. The pressure readings that I took say it extracts air. The "tufts test" says it extracts air. It extracts air. My pseudo-GrayForest started working down around 25 mph.
