Road Race Engineering hood vent

For the record I can document the area over the hood is low pressure. This is why I run the stock hood latch and pins as well in a center location to follow the factory reinforcements, I'll try to get a picture of Vernon's hood bent an inch everywhere except where the hood pins are. ~203mph at bonneville.

So what are you saying that the whole hood is an area of low pressure and it doesn't matter where you put the vent? The people at road race say to put the vent as close to the exhaust manifold as you can. So that you can see the left side like in the first post, with the black eclipse.

Machine shop just finished motor today so I'll do the test when the car is moving again.

The main reason for road race saying to put it over the exhaust manifold is because that is the most effective place to remove the most hot air.

Apologies for not getting the test results back this past weekend. My chase car never materialized.

I'm sure tuft testing will prove what we already know. And yes, it's not a bad idea to vent at the hottest point. But I'd like to add one thought to the SOAD's. When you don't have the lower pressure areas because you're sitting in stop and go traffic and it's much harder for the heat to escape. So it yellows your paint, dries out your lines and heat soaks everything else.

For me, my heating/cooling issues were most prominent during this time frame and it's one more reason I've found this to be so effective (and more attractive than stuffing washers under the rear hood hinges).

Tossing up another pic, sold the car but never had a problem with the vent there.

I have a question.. For a 2G does this vent go right where the grey forest mod is? I plan to do the greyforest hood vent mod until I can paint my car and get the RRE vent molded in... Would it go right over top? (cut inbetween the 2 vents obvously..)

I'm installing one on my 2G during spring break next week, I will tuft it after it is on there.

(Ok, so I'm about to expose why I got a 51% in art class in grade 9 but here goes...)

In an effort to address the issue of water rolling down into your engine compartment and onto critical components, look at my sketch attached. Note this would only work with a rearward-facing hood scoop and not the flush mounted vents as some are discussing here. The sketch also doesn't show the actual vent/scoop in place.

I think if you roll the trailing edge of the "hole" similar to rolling your fenders you could stop water from dripping in. You wouldn't have to cut the ends like I showed in the sketch. You could just cut the opening like you normally would and still roll that back edge so it's all nice and flowing.

It wouldn't solve the "direct shot" from rain falling though.

And I wouldn't worry about putting a mesh to stop critters from getting in through your hood's new sunroof. If you do worry, start by putting a whole whack of chicken wire underneath your car first because generally that's where they'll crawl in from!

Good luck with the mods and tufting and such. :thumb:

or you could just mount the vent on your hood and apply a some ultra gery around the edges so the water is unable to seep in around the edges. There is a lip on the vent itself already so water can't just drop in except on the raditor hose and the heat shield

This thread makes me wish we had an aerodynamics forum in the tech section for FUNCTIONAL body modifications. This topic just doesn't fit "appearance interior/exterior," and some of the responses are ridiculous.

Somebody please do a tuft test already, I'm interested in this mod too.

I still cant understand why someone here can't just tape a damn piece of tape and string in front of there car and go for a spin around the block

My guess is because those that have bought this are all rushing to finish up work before the actual season begins. I will have some tuft testing of my VIS hood by the end of the month, but I've got a bunch of other stuff I've got to finish before I really get this thing tested.

I'm still waiting on my car to be finished and then i'll do it. they told me that they would try to have it done by today, but they have to many things to do to other cars since they were waiting on the machine shop. So now they are going to finish the other cars first instead of doing mine that has been the since 2/02/08. Makes no since to me but thats how they want to do it.

Right now im making the stincel to use so i can cut open the hood and drop it on there.
