I was about to do the greyforest hood mod, but decided I might as well go grab a RRE hood vent for $50 since they're about 15 min from me. Well, here's the results of the test fit. Still gotta do some drilling to put in the metal screws... but I like the way it looks already.

Thats pretty kewl man! But wash your car!! j/k! Actually, its pretty impressive with the photo's you have. You'll need to post some more pictures as soon as you have everything done. Do you have concerns with water entering into the vent's when it rain's hard? Thats my only concern with such a set up.

That's not really an issue for me, it'll be hitting mostly the radiator hose, and heat shield, and part of the turbo based on how the vent is placed. My main concern is little critters crawling into my engine bay, but I'm going to put a little mesh screen in there.

here's another side shot, just put in some metal screws to hold it down.

We don't get *much* rain around here, but that's just as much a danger as anything... especially given that the vent is right over the exhaust manifold and turbo. Which tend to glow red-hot after a good bout of driving. Personally, I'd be pretty worried about water falling onto metal that hot.. especially cast iron. Drastic thermal differentials in localized areas are a recipe for manifold, exhaust housing, and O2 housing cracks.

If that were a problem I don't think the evo's would have the open hood like they do. This has been discussed many many times, particularly concerning the greyforest mod. I don't know if anyone will ever actually agree with each other on it but the only problem I see would be if you kept the car outside, it would rust. Other then that it will be hot enough to evaporate any water instantaneously. Or if it was sitting, it would heat it up until it eventually evaporated.

i hear you on the rain but the main issue for us ohio boys is snow. why is it cold in april?
god ohio is weird.ROFL

ROFL Well, its been cold down here in Arkansas lately, not as cold as you've been having, but cold nonetheless. Hey, maybe the inconveinent truth is that its just global warming. But back to the subject, something seems out of place in the photo's, the vent looks like it maybe backwards, it's probably just me, but it reminds me of the scoop on the hood of Subbie's.

yeah man, if ohio was a guy walking down the road id hit him in the balls. haha. but either way, the vent on his 2g looks sweet.. im gunna look into more this rain issue for me, the ideas and comments and such should keep comming

It is a vent, not a scoop, so it is placed correctly. I think rain would only be an issue if you didn't have a heat shield and decided to do some really hard pulls while it's raining. Like said before, the evo's have them in the same spot and I'm sure not every evo owner keeps their car in the garage. :thumb:

Hmm.. i think theyd look alot better if the edges were molded and it was painted to match the rst of the car. I usually disapprove molding body parts, but this would make it look better. I guess it doesnt matter if its molded since if you took it off your gonna have a huge hole in your hood. Ive seen dsm's with this scoop, my reaction ->WTF only because i dont like the edges, itd look better molded and painted because itd have a smoother look. But over all i like it, it doesnt look all that bad not molded i guess :thumb: .

look for posts by user Greyforestgst using the search, you'll find LOTS of pictures of what I'm talking about. :thumb:

I like how the smoke seeps out of the holes in the hood with the 'grey forest' mod, looks pretty cool :thumb: .

He said when it rains that it evaporates and looks like steam. I am still seriously considering doing it. It's pretty badass imo. I just don't want to hurt the resale value by cutting holes in the hood :)

Get a spare hood to cut up, weld, fill, bend, paint, piss on, etc. Keep the original wrapped in cardboard in the garage rafters or something.

I rather spend the money in other places I think ;)

Woulndt the exhaust manifold crack if rain hit it while it was hot? Im pretty sure i read that in a different forum on here somewhere. Or maybe they were reffering to tubular exhaust manifolds? Sorry for the off topic post.

Hey Guys.

I thought I'd add a few pix of my project. There's a story behind it, but I'll skip to the chase.

Parts Used:
-Carbon Creations hood 499
-RRE/Carbon Trix reverse vent 99

Paint:
- Exposed carbon on the inner vent ant lip of the hood
- I also painted the underside of the hood and will be adding the OEM stickers and heat sheilding as well to complete the look.

Next step is to install Evo IX Recaros (I need to re-skin them so they conform with the OEM leather, and I'm going to toss the Momo steering wheel off my evo in as well.

Thanks for looking,

Blaze

^^^^^^^^^^Holy wow that looks good man. You almost make me feel bad that I'm about to just rivet the carbon vent to my stock hood and rock it all tough racer status.

This car is very special to me. It was originally owned by GReddy and used as their development and marketing platform. It was later sold to Shaun (4WHLBST) who essentially restored it. Then recently it was sold to me. Super high miles too (33k) :D

Thank you for the kind words. I'll post up the interior pix in the "how do i get evo seats/evo steerings wheel to fit".
