I also boost 26-30 psi multipule times a day every day :) on an hx40 t3. Not overkill imo it's not synthetic oil.

I think it's overkill, but hey it's your money.

I'm at the same boost level, daily driving it like an arse quite honestly, car sees redline more than it should. I stick to a 2-3k mile change with VR1 20w50(the cheap dino oil) and an oem filter, never any bearing or turbo issues in several years.

Nothing wrong with cheap dino oils as long as the oil changes are held above.

Motors have lasted 200-400k miles with regular dino oil change frequencies.

Only reason (and don't want to start a oil debate here) why synth oils are more what they are is due to the oil molecule setup between the two oils.

Dino oils have various sizes of molecules causing a more rapid breakdown which develops sludge, which why the 2 to 3k oil change frequencies.

Synth oils have only one size of molecule that bonds together to form a much longer lasting lubrication (why you never use synth oils as break-in oil because the high lubrication properties of synth slows the rings from seating in for quite the time) which is also more durable so longer lasting usage can be done before eventual oil breakdown. AMSOIL brags on 25K mile oil changes, but still have to change the filter after 5K miles,.

Thus, the plan with synth oils was to keep the oil in the pan longer so less oil changes were needed, but the filter still have to be changed.

Thus, if one was going to change oil on a short term basis under 2k miles, it seems wise to just use dino oils to save a few bucks at the end.

It can be a very expensive fix if they forget to tighten the drain plug (I've heard this happen on more than one occasion).

My aunt was coming to visit us (1100 mile trip one way) and stopped on the way to have her oil changed at one of these quick shops. Long story short, oil light came on 50 miles down the road. Barely any oil in the engine of her new car. Knock knock knock. The metering device on the oil hose was messed up and showed it put the correct amount in but didn't. They never even checked to make sure it was full. After some threats of legal action they paid for a new engine.

About the disposable oil filters, Doesn't everyone have a recycle place in their area? I live an hour from any of what I would call big a big city and I take my filters and my used oil to the recycle center local. For free. They end up crushing the filters in a press to remove the oil and melt the steel down.

About the reusable filters I think Jaxness got a magnus one. Maybe we can get her thoughts on the filter.

oil changed at one of these quick shops.
Won't argue this one at all.
Fellow employee of our workplace took his vehicle in for a change, but not at a quick place, but a more respectable shop.
Same thing as above but with some different results: Leaves the shop and started to hear odd noises from the motor and goes back to the shop of these issues.
They hear the sounds and tells him that his main crank bearings were beginning to go and the motor needs overhauled immediately. He doesn't make the appointment for the task since he had to get to work.
Gets to work and tells me of this crazy day with his car and the noises involved. We go out to the car, he starts it up and has this clanking noise like oil pressure was low. He stops the motor, and I pull the dipstick ... it wa bone dry.
I showed this to him and said to him that he doesn't have any oil in the pan. He gave me some money and head to NAPA for 5 qts of oil.
Returned and get the oil in the crankcase and have oil level on the dipstick was correct. Start the motor and it runs super smooth.
You might say he was a little flamed, headed to the shop and threatened a lawsuit on false services.

In short, got his money back with a credit for a next service and the technician who worked on his car was immediately fired.

Why I watch these shop guys do this work - keeps them honest.

I do have a Magnus filter, and I love it :D I have to order my cases of Brad Penn anyways, as its not available locally. So grabbing a filter at NAPA/Advance/etc isn't really a convenience if I have no other reason to go in there, haha.

I didn't know the importance of checking your oil for shavings until it was too late for my 7 bolt block. I didnt have a magnetic drain plug, so when my bearings went and I finally took a can opener to my oil filter, the metal shavings scared me, haha.

So when I put my 6 bolt in I got the Magnus filter. It was ~$100, and it will pay for itself in about 10 oil changes, but I really got it for the convenience of being able to take it apart and check whats been filtered.

Where are you people spending $10-$12 for filters? NAPA Gold 1381 @ $6 each, Brad Penn 20w-50 or 10w-40.

2.3L stroker, daily driven at 30+ psi with over 50k miles on it.

I really got it for the convenience of being able to take it apart and check whats been filtered.

That would be the main benefit, and a very useful one for some people.

What size do these come in at? Length wise, as I'm getting the evolution 9 down facing ofh and wanted to know if it's the stubby type of filter or the normal eclipse longer type filter? Just don't want it catching on anything as the evolution stubby filters sit flush with the oil pan as it is.

From what Marco told me, the same filter will work for 1g's, 2g's, and Evo's. Its not a stubby filter, just the standard length I would say.

Oh ok I only ask as when I was last in the state's and was at pepboys the evolution filter was quite a bit shorter then the eclipse filter and it was also slightly wider aswell

Revival from the dead, keep your zombie bump comments, thank you.

I've been considering getting one of these Magnus filters for a while now. For the people that are saying that it takes forever to "pay itself off"... the ease of inspecting the filtered junk is worth the money in my opinion. Unless you have a filter cutter tool, opening a filter up sucks. I've used rotary tools in the past to do this but it's not ideal at all to do it this way.

For now, I use the filters that are for an EVO from the parts store because they're smaller and easier to take off of the OFH. The big DSM filters are more difficult to get a good grip on.

Does anyone here have any long term experience to share about the Magnus filter? I'd be interested in hearing how it's worked out for you. I imagine it's a good product because Magnus doesn't seem to be in the business of selling people snake oil with their products.

Man its 4 years old this thread!!! Haha only joking, had to because you asked for it.

Well my magnus filter is ok, the glue fell out which i may have stated on a previous reply and it got into the oil ways, so if i knew this i would not have either bought it or removed it before use! As they dont make them they wont care if its faulty! Im looking at another here in the UK and it to me looks exsctly the same and most likely is as they mass produced,

Another thing is make sure its tight, and i mean tight, ive had it come loose a few times and i know i did this cap up super tight but so far its been in since i noe go alot tighter and its more of a pita to get off now from the heat but its sealed so im ok with that! Just use s good vise!

The magnus one is not good, it killed my motor cause it backed off, o ring way too thin! I wouldnt recommend it to anyone. I never had an issue with an oil filter for 14k miles since the motor was built using oem or wix filters, i put the magnus on and it vibrated off after 300 miles. Lost everything. Not worth it.

And it looks like I'm not the only one either. Ditch that before it costs your motor
