OK guys, I made the mistake of selling the ignition switch out of my talon that I'm parting out before it was out of the car. So now I can't figure out how to get the fuggin thing out...Can anyone give me any tips? I don't know where to start.

Also, does anyone know how to get the driverside airbag out? I went to take it out, and there is one wire that won't come out. I dont remember which one, think there was one white one and one black one, and one of them unclipped easily, and the other one is stuck behind the steering wheel or something. Help!

Thanks,

for the Ignition switch:

* remove the lower part of the dash (knee guard)
* remove the steering column cover (top and bottom)
* remove the 4 bolts which hold the steering column to the botom of the gauges (this just makes it easier to see, optional)
* using a small phillips screwdriver unscrew the ignition switch (it is behind where you put that key, it is small and white. Only one screw holds it in place, I moved all the wires out of the way to get the screwdriver in there straight)
* using a soldering iron, remove the 6 wires on the switch

and that's about it... took me about 10 minutes to get it out...

as for the Air Bag.. i dunno.. hope this helps

Do you need the _switch_, or the _lock_? The switch slides out by removing the cover, putting the key in, turning to ACC, and pressing in on the 1/8" hole on the front. Slides right out.

For the airbag, remove the glovebox- slide the stoppers on the sides out of their notches, drop the door, remove 2 phillips head screws, lift off door, and you should be able to follow it from there.

I just need to get the lock and key assembly out.. And I'm talking about the driverside airbag. There was one clip that was no problem to get out, then there was another one that is kind of behind the steering wheel that I can't see a clip for. I believe one was black and one was white.

I just picked up a sweet 90 Laser RS problem is the guy lost the key (luckily not the title LOL) I know I can pick up the stuff at a local JY to fix but how much of a pain will it be to swap? should I call a lock-smith and try to have a key cut?

It'll suck some to replace, because the cylinder has to be turned to ACC to pull out the switch lock. You may be best off to pull the passenger door lock and have a key made to fit it.
Someone in another thread said the dealer can cut a key from the VIN, but I don't know if that's correct.

ign switches aint hard to replace go to www.partznet.com and click steering column than ignition switch, or you could jsut go to a mitsu dealer and have em cut you a key, cuz they can do it!@

mitz dealer told me to try chrysler, chrysler told me to try mitz. I think I'm just gonna have joe-blow locksmith cut me one, would the lock out of the trunk work? I'm pretty sure it's not been replaced with a different one

Does anybody have any idea on how to remove the ignition switch module, its held on by two threaded bolts with no head that hold the module around the steering column.

Those are security bolts, the heads break off after they are tightened.
Get the drill out and line it up straight, or you will be buying a whole housing.
And resize that pic.

Fixed, and I really don't need to salvage this thing, need it off. I'll try drilling through them though.

You can take a flat head screwdriver and hammer it into the head of the bolt, then just unscrew them.

Drilling works but it takes a bit to get them off, plus keeping it straight is no fun.

If it's not too late, before you try anything, get some PB Blaster and an automatic center punch. Run some blaster down a piece of wire into the back side of the threaded holes, let it steep overnight, repeat in the morning and give the blank heads several shots with the center punch over time. The pot metal used in the ignition housing will tend to seize with the plating on the threads over time, and the lube with the hammering will break loose that bond. After that, they'll often thread back out with very little resistance.
If you have the key, or know how to shave one (ask any of the thieving little punks in your neighborhood), you can remove the ignition lock by turning to ACC, pushing up on the release button (it's obvious when looking, the hole on the bottom) with a stubby Phillips screwdriver, and pulling the assembly out.

Because I've had to do it on a car before.. I had to replace the ignition in my Vr4 when I got it because the previous owner didn't have a key for it.. I actually bought a new one instead, but it is possible to switch them out if you know what you're doing..

You'll still need the key to get the other car's switch out. You turn it to ACC and press the big button with a Phillips screwdriver.

I have 2 2g's...One thats mine and the other that i bought from some random guy that didnt give me a key...

Wanted to know if i can swap the key ign. from mine to the one that i bought.

What i understood is that i have to have the key for new car to take it out ?

Sadly, the same information used for legitimate ownership access and that used by thieves is often the same.

To remove the ignition key cylinder from the ignition lock boss, you turn the key to ACC and press in the release button hole. It's obvious when looking at it, and would be more so if I could find the goddamned saved picture I have on a hard drive that XP seems to have locked-up forever because I foolishly thought I owned the fcking computer and was allowed to add my own video card and SCSI controller to hardware I'd paid for, not thinking I'd have to get Bill Gates's permission to work on things I own.

But I digress.

You can also chase out the snapoff-headed screws that hold the locking mechanism to the column. It's also a pain in the ass.

I have issues of the simplest design. I have had (and been driving) my '94 Eclipse for about 2 months now but this mourning I get into the car and try to start it up but the key will not turn to OR past ACC. Its like the key doesn't go to the ignition switch anymore.

I had a Civic which had a safety mechanism that you had to jiggle the steering wheel to sometimes get the key to turn but no luck here. I tried all 3 of my keys and still no luck. The only thing that has changed from last night, when I went to go pick up dinner, was the weather - last night the temp was seven degrees F and this mourning was negative-two degrees F (though I think this is not the problem).

Being new to DSMs (and working on cars in general), is there some fundamentally simple thing I am missing here? Also, please be assured, I am using the correct key, I am not completely inept, though I do feel like it...

I have read and understand that not being able to turn the key to the ACC position will cause considerable headache as this is the position in which you have to have the key in order to do any sort of replacement.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might tackle this problem? Perhaps even a, "You idiot. Why didn't you try *blank* first?" would be helpful.
