A friend of mine finally caved and sold me his lot of DSM parts and a trashed shell, among those parts was an ECU with link on it. When he first got the car it ran and drove but we have since sold the turbo and intercooler, the turbo being a FP 68HTA so I'm sure the injectors are bigger as well. They are for sure aftermarket but the label is so washed out all you can see is a red tint from what used to be.. I'd really like to install the ECU but how would I go about setting up for my car which is still stock turbo and injectors? I haven't hooked it up to play with the settings, only to log when the parts car was whole but never mine. I read about disconnecting the battery to reset the fuel map but that seems too easy.. I am totally new to all this. TIA

You will need to install it and power it up, but not attempt to turn the car on.

With the key in the "ON" position you will be able to connect and should be able to adjust your global/deadtime settings back to factory. You'll also need to go through various tabs and set those back to factory; all depends on what the previous setup was. MAF car or not, simulating front o2, modified ecu pin assignments, etc.

Fire up Link and at the top, reset fuel trims!
Viola!

So basically tab through everything and reset to stock, is it that simple once I find everything?

The car did have a wideband and o2 (something I also needed!) so it shouldn't be simulated. I do believe the BoV was vented but I'm not certain it was setup for that, I don't think it was on speed density or anything. How else could I verify that?

Anything else I should look for to be safe driving? I will be playing with some extra lights hopefully today so the battery will be disconnected for a few minutes but I'll still reset though the link software. I'd like to be as familiar with the app as possible.

Base files:
Most tuners will start with a 2g settings, as it is not as aggressive.

Also when you get a chance watch the videos on ecmlinks demo page.
For sure, I have been watching them for a while now but started a few months ago before I had anything lined up. I'm more of a "learn by doing" type so I'll likely watch them again while sitting in my car hooked up to the link. I had to do some trouble shooting with the parts car to get it reading and logging but a refresher would be good.

Unfortunately those links no longer work on my computer so I haven't been able to reference them since actually having the ecu in hand.. @1990TSIAWDTALON I was hoping to get the ecu in today as the weather cools down. I would assume if the motor from the donor car also has the CAS on the passenger side then that setting would already be changed but once I install the stock 2g map I would have to do that and the plug wires right? I know on a fresh setup I would but coming from an already running 2g is what's confusing me. TIA

Edit: Re-read this morning and it looks like I would have to do plug wires and make sure that box is still checked regardless of the settings on the ecu before or after installing the map. I am currently poking around more on the wiki at work so I might throw it in during lunch.
This was my reference http://www.ecmtuning.com/wiki/swapplugwires

So, update. I did get the ecu in last night, swapped wires, CAS and started it up. Gave it a couple blips on the throttle to see everything was working and shut it off for the night thinking I'd drive it to work this morning. No go, I was babying it out of my parking spot and when letting off the throttle would almost die. Turned it back on and back it back up a hair, died again. I also posted on a Facebook group and someone was helpful enough to offer some help should I run into trouble so I sent them a message this morning and the walked me through fixing some other options I was unaware of. So it did improve but still not to the point of being driveable as it would idle almost to the point of dying (250ish rpms) when under the same conditions with the car warm. Idle seems fine but boy she hates taking throttle now. AFR seems all sorts of crazy but I'm also not running a wideband so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Have you loaded a stock 2g tune into the car?
Since it is a 1997, I would start with that and work up to anything else that it needs.
Here is the file to start with. Load all to ECU. It is 2g fuel and 2g timing maps.

Reset fuel trims at the top of the menu. It will start a fresh capture for LTFTs and STFTs. I would then say to watch the AFRs but I see no wideband.
I have one car like that so it takes seat time to dial in a tune on her and I have her on E85 now, no ethanol sensor, no WB.

That's pretty awesome! Sounds like you have some good ecu trickery going on haha. I never put it back in last night to mess with as it started raining and is continuing into today. Hopefully this weekend I can sit in it and look around some more. I did bring my computer into work today at least to look at the logs and try to play around with settings but I don't know if I can see fuel trim settings without being connected.

You will be connected to the cars ECU and have the ignition on, then in the top menu under "ECU", scroll down to "Reset Fuel Trims" and it will start new on them. :thumb:
You can send some of the rain to me, it is hot as a firecracker out here in the Plains.

Awesome, thank you. I work Saturday's but am off Sunday and Monday and Sunday looks to be a bit cooler so I'll try it then. The rain looks to be done by tomorrow so I'll tell it to head your way! LOL

Hey I'm in the same boat. Just wanted to see if you have any updates.
I haven't messed with it again since putting it in and having to get my stock one back in to go to work that day. Lately I've been working on a part out and waiting for another car so this ones just been waiting for a nicer day to mess with.

Ahhh, nifty. I will definitely try this. Hopefully I can get a day under 90 degrees soon and mess with it..

Oops, here ya go. One of the links someone posted didn't work for me. But anyway, here's what I added.

Thanks, that's awesome! If this would have been up when I got the ECU I'm sure I would have found it! Lol I'd be eager to try at it this weekend but the temp will be around 100 with the heat index and we are expecting rain tonight so the humidity will be brutal. I'll be sure to update as soon as I can give this a shot.
