Ok, Im new here and glad to be here.:thumb: I've always worked on hondas, so i am buying an eclipse shell tomorrow, i've always wanted to get into the DSM world and this is my chance to build one. It does not have the engine but however has the original automatic transmission. its a 97 GS fwd, and i have already contacted someone who has the engine, but he has to sell the transmission with it, which is 5 speed. I plan to do a 5 speed swap later down the line but i'm in a situation where i have a limited time to work on this, my question is, if i take the manual tranny off of the engine, will the auto tranny bolt in without a problem?:hmm: what will i need? I have searched for 3 hours and have not found an exact answer. Thanks in advance.

You will need the pilot bushing for the torque convertor, that goes in the end of the crank, 5 speeds don't have them. You will also need, the Torque Convertor, flex plate, and both sets of bolts for TC and flex plate.

Thanks, appreciate it so much, so 1 set of bolts from the flexplate and the other from the TC? how much is a pilot bushing?

I'd call the guys at Miller Imports. They probably have a good used one you can get off them for cheap. You can get a lot of DSM parts from them to be honest.

Usually, the pilot bushing is already in the transmission at the head of the fluid pump with the front input TC seal in place. TC should be also with the tranny. All you really need is the flex plate if the starter inspection plate is already attached to the transmission.

Also, is the starter mounted to the tranny? If so, leave it there for now since it will match up with the starter ring on the TC.

But when doing manual changeout, you might have to change the starter if the starter is still attached to the motor-tranny setup you're getting-in which you'll be using that attached started to the manual tranny.

First off, How do you figure the pilot bushing should be in the Trans at the head of the Trans pump with the bushing? And you will defiantly need the auto starter because the 5 spd ones don't work. The Bendix doesn't engage the ring as well.

yeah, well there would be no need for the 5speed ones anyway right? So all i need is the pilot bushing, the auto starter and the flexplate with both sets of bolts.

If this is a GS then you are a 420a.

Yea i know its a 420a, just trying to remove the manual off of one and put my auto tranny on.

Here is the shell guys, got it for only 300$ and its going to cost about 300$ to register it, so basically 600 for it. 120k on the body, just needs the engine. 1997 GS :)
