I need some help, my buddies bent his key in his 90 talon and his other buddy tried straigtening it using the ignition cylinder. WTF Basically he destroyed the entire ingnition cylinder and in the process of trying to remove it we had to bust the bracket that holds it to the steering column. My current dilemna is removing the actual bracket off the column. There appears to be 2 either pressed rods or threaded bolts holding it on, however, before I start ripping the dash apart to properly get at them I wanted to find out if anyone had the procedure for actually removing this bracket. If they are threaded bolts than I need to find a way to get them out as they have no heads on them.

They are breakaway bolts. They are designed to snap the head off when you tighten them down so you can't remove them. have to cut them out and get new ones. You might be able to slot them. Notice the top isn't smooth but it's obvious something was once connected to the bolt. If you saw a new one it would be quite clear.

Yea I thought thats what they were but wasn't 100%, you can tell there was a nut or something on the top. Well shoot, looks like this is gonna be fun....

I took mine apart. A dremel with a small cutoff wheel is all you need. the bolts are extremely easy to spin. just get a clean center cut on either side however you can fit it, then take a small flathead and twist out you go. put a rag on the interior or you will be wiping metal dust from all over the place.

I know this is an older thread but wanted to add an update since I just did it myself.

All of the setup procedures listed in http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-exterior-interior/133662-how-remove-ignition.htmlare are accurate. The only thing I would like to add is that on the breakaway bolts mentioned in this thread, I simply drilled a small pilot hole in the head (the metal was relatively soft) then used an "ez out" to unscrew it. It was not extremely tight, came out easily.

For those of you that dont know what and "ez out" is, it looks sort of like a thread tap. The "cutting threads" are reversed so that when you are trying to back out a screw, it bites into it as you try to back it out. It made this task VERY easy.

Additionally, when I put this all back together, I used 2 each 8Mx1.25x25 socket head bolts to replace the breakaway bolts supplied, just incase I needed to take it back apart for some reason. I had to grind down the circumference of the heads just a bit, a task easily done with my bench grinder. Use your allen head driver to hold the head as you evenly grind away. Test fit several times until it slides in all the way.

...hope this helps!
