removing fuel pump

I have a 90 eagle talon FWD. I am trying to change the fuel pump and im having a problem. I have the fuel line disconnected and the screws holding the plate to the rear of the tank out. It still feels like there is something holding the plate/pump assembly in. I can pull the assembly out like an inch but it feels like there is something inside the tank holding it back. I have followed the manual and I dont know what else I need to do. The reason I am changing the pump is when I turn the car on there is no pump kicking on and no fuel being pumped to the engine. The car sat for like 2 years so I figured old fuel in tank ruined the pump. Is there any other switches/fuses or anything that could prevent the fuel pump from coming on? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

i like to send power to the pump from jumper wires and ground it out too *edit* to make sure it wont turn on when you know it has power and ground

i would get a wiring diagram and run a wire from the battery to the positive on the fuel pump and a wire from the ground on it to a ground on the body you know works well.

i as a mechanic and owning 7 dsms have never seen a dsm pump fail. you need to look into the relay as well, it should "click on" as you crank the engine over it can be felt with you finger on the relay

as for getting it out that could be the strainer or the float for the level sensor.

There is a bolt on bottom of fuel tank. The drain plug it is 22mm i think. It holds the fuel pump in place, make sure u put the old gas in the proper container and dispose of properly.

The pump must be wiggled and angled to get it out of the tank, it will not come out straight due to the float, and assembly, use a small light in the gap and see where the pump is hung up, then twist accordingly. You should not fight with the pump because things could get bent, just take your time and you will get it out. Try and remember which way you twisted to get it out, install it the same way. Make sure the plate seals to the tank.
