Removing front bumper (Tutorial link dead)

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Was going to post this exact question but you already did so bump to this post. Also anyone know any way to contact the owner of the site so we can see if they could reupload the tutorials or something? If not any other good tutorials with pictures on the front bumper removal?

My son just did his 95. Had to have the headlights out for some of the bolts but the rest of them for the most part are visible. He had the radiator and a/c out also as I can see them in my yard......

Ok, checked with the son. He had to remove the a/c ondensor (not sure if it was necessary but he did), radiator, plastic ducting behind it and headlights which were a real PITA he says. Then he could get to all of the bumper bolts. Hope he didn't leave anything out.

I don't have a link but. There are the 5-6 bolts on the top when you raise the hood. There are 2ea on driver and passers side. One of which is behind the turn signals. The lights do have to come out. The bolts on the back of the headlights are clearly visible but there are 2(1 on each side at the bottom under the bumper) that need to be removed simply pry on bumper with a long extention and 10mm socket and your done. If you still have bottom splash guards there are a few there also. Good luck

@1990TSIAWDTALON: You may not want to show this to your son as it may anger him..............

OP;

Here is a quick walk-through using some of the pics from the site you are referring to:

1. Jack up front vehicle and place securely on jack stands.

2. Remove the plastic screw retainers on each side where the inner fender attaches to the bumper (in wheel well).

3. Remove the side marker lights. At this point, you may want to spray PB blaster or equivalent on the 2 10 mm bolts that hold the bumper to the front fenders. There may also be two-sided tape between the bumper and fender. You will need to remove these bolts on each side as seen below:

4. Open the hood and remove the 5 10 mm bolts and remove the bracket located on the top of the front bumper. It is #2 in the diagram below:

5. If you have a 95-96, you will need to remove the fog lights. 97-99 models will not need the fog lights removed.

6. Under the car, remove the 2 14 mm bolts holding frame extensions to the frame on each side as shown below:

7. Next, carefully slide the front bumper assembly away from the the frame as seen below:

This is the easiest way to remove the bumper. Be aware some will make other recommendations. There is no need to try to remove the bolts others struggle with located under the headlights shown below:

On a similar topic, does anyone actually recommend bumper quick release bands or latches on a DD? I'm taking my bumper cover off for various reasons and in past experiences those side bolts by the side markers tend to snap. I usually just put a couple zip screws on as replacements but I am intrigued by these quick release bands.

I have the quick release bumper kit sold in the freelancer section and I love it!! I can have my bumper off in under 10 mins with it not jacked up. Definitely work it. Plus the dzus buttons look cool.

Thanks for the replies , they are extremely helpful.
I also have another question: how does one remove the bumper from the bumper support, once it is removed from the car? Is this the part where everyone says to rip off the plastic tabs on the bumper support?

Remove the upper and lower bolts attaching it. There are four pins that are removed in the air dam of the bumper. at this point, it should be pretty clear what to take off.

Well I attempted it and as usual, things did not go well. Just about everybolt broke on me from being old rusty and proabbly over tightened from previous owners. There were already a ton of bolts broken or missing from them. Also couldn't get the bolts off the frama rail because I dont have a way to jack the car up and they were too tight from the awkward angle I had to go at. My advice would be to be very carful and spray all the bolts with pb blaster or something before even attempting to take them off. Currenlty my bumper is partly held up with zip ties LOL.
