2G Rear Quarter Windows

For those of you who have removed the rear quarter windows on a 2G, how did you do it without breaking them? I know it'd be wise to have a spare set before removing them, but I'd have to remove those too, so if I can get one set removed, I won't need to worry about a back up. My GSX shell is getting close to being finished for paint, and these windows are among the last things to be removed. Thanks all.

The biggest thing is getting them out without destroying the weatherstripping/border. What has always worked best for me is to get the 1.99 yellow box cutters from harbor freight and cut them out as much as you can from the inside then fishing line it starting at the “roof” corner. Those box cutters have just the right amount of flex and adjustability vs the cheaper or more expensive ones. Heat guns help a lot also. Once you get the corner pulled back enough the get the razor blade in its cake. They can take quite a bit of abuse without breaking. I’ve cut out quite a few and this method is the best I’ve found. Don’t bother with windshield removal tools. They generally suck.

So you have to buy the whole window setup? My windows are perfect condition but my rubber pieces are kinda crusty and losing color.

That is correct. They are one assembly. Some people have used lexan to make “oversized” windows that would be the full size with weatherstripping and just made a spacer to go between the window and body to make it sit flush with everything.

Windshield removal tools work great if you know how to use them, there are a few different options.

I have a pneumatic tool I use to cut out glass. Its specifically for cutting out auto glass. Music wire works too but is tough on the 2g as the molding is integrated and difficult to avoid cutting through with the wire as you work your way around.......but great to have on hand for certain tough areas.

Induction heaters are the way to go and are stupid easy to use. There is a cost factor on those though.

you could get a set off ebay and clean them up. might take a few shots to get a set your happy with though. few other easy to find dsm places you could try too.

You could prep the molding right and hit it with one of a few differant SEM products for a great finish.......if you can come up with a set worth the effort. Can be done for sure.

My set is in good condition minus the passenger side has a few barbed wire scratches through it from the previous owner. Maybe I can somehow fill the scratches with a similar material.
