I was backing out of a garage and I found that my car just bounced off of the reverse gate. I got the car home and did a skate Bearing mod on the shift cables. I still got no reverse.

So I tried something. I held the clutch in and tried to shift with the cables disconnected by moving the linkages on the trans itself. It still did not go into reverse, but felt like it hit all other gears.

1. Is this a problem inside the trans? Can i look in there without r&r?

2. I took it to a shop and they want to put new cables on. think they may be wrong, but they cannot find any cables for it anyway. Any ideas?

AHWBA!

check the cables and the linkage for play and change them if possible, also check your clutch if its working properly. start with the simple things first before jumping to expensive solutions.

can you shift to any other gears??? try to shift to second and then try to put reverse and let us know if this works. any grinding ???

If moving the tranny shift levers by hand didn't work, how would replacing the cables do anything? With cables connected and engine running, try letting clutch out slightly while shifting into reverse from neutral. This is a known symptom when the reverse idler gear teeth get worn (they get less pointed). If this works I'd suggest living with it otherwise you will have a very large repair bill.

the same thing happend with my 99 gst manual trans. one day it was in the garage and i went to put it into reverse and it wouldnt go after trying different things slowly the other gears started going. i brought it to a trans shop and a couple days later they told me it was my gear selector and the teeth 4 the reverse were grounded. i was pissed because i only drove it for 500 miles after i bought it. it cost me about 2000 to get it replaced with a reman. one.
