I have a 98 gst 5sp and all of a sudden my reverse stopped working. 1 through 5th work fine but it just will not go into reverse, even if the car is off it won't go in. It happened out of no-where too. I was driving my car one day, everything was good. The next day i get into it and try to back out of my driveway and it didn't go in. It doesn't even go in a little. Its almost feels like when you try to put your car from 5th straight to reverse, its like something is blocking it???

check to make sure your shift linkage is not being blocked by somthing first but my guess is you might have a broken shift fork or syncro in your tranny. also check your slave cylinder and make sure its engaging all the way.

it wouldn't be your slave becasue you can shft without the clutch when not running. It probaly is your shift linkage at your tranny. I would also check under the radio and see if anything is pushing on the cables funny,

I'd say first thing would be to go to the tranny itself. figure out the 5th position with the levers and try that. it could be that you need to adjust the shifter linkage or possibly on the tranny side. if you can't get it to go into fifth from the tranny then i would start thinking shift fork failure or synchro. fortunate for you the fifth gear is easy to get to. The cover on the very end of tranny, when you pull that off you will be looking at 5th gear set and fork. if all else fails pull the cover off and see if you can see anything... drain fluid though and pull apart slowly, there is a washer that sits against the houseing. let us know what you find...

I disconnected the shift linkage and tried to shift into reverse from the tranny and it still didn't work. Today i just finished taking the tranny out of my car and pulled the top open and everything looks good, i think... I'll post some pictures soon.

No, it still won't go into reverse out of the car. My problem is reverse just stopped working and someone is coming up this saturday from about 2 hrs away to look at my car, (its for sale) so i have to get it back in and working before then. I have an spare tranny, the only thing is that the diff. broke and shot a hole in the tranny, but all of the gears still shifted good before i got this other tranny. I was thinking of just taking out what i need and putting it into the other tranny, i just don't want to mess anythng up worse than it is.

Here is a good pic to show you what your dealing with. The gear in red is the reverse gear. The arm in blue is the arm that attaches too the 5th and rev. shifter shaft and engages the rev. gear.

I took the reverse sensor out and it still didn't go in. Then i tried tapping on the shifter fork shaft while tring to put it into reverse and nothing. Then i was going to take the tranny apart so i loosened the two nuts then was trying to tap out the pin at the top of the shifter fork after a couple taps i tried reverse one last time before i took gears off and it worked!!!!! Im not sure now if i should put it back into my car or is there something i can do so this won't happen again?

So I am guessing the guy didn't buy it then? If he is still on his way I would say...well...you know, MAKE IT WORK. If hes not then I don't know what you could do other than put it back in and hope for the best...and I would suggest DON"T SELL YOUR DSM!

About 4 months ago I had my bellhousing replaced. I reinstalled the trans, and I couldn't shift into reverse. For about 3 days, my mechanic, my dad, and I were trying to diagnose as much as we could without removing the trans. Everything seemed fine, but still no reverse. 2 weeks ago, I was at a red light, and I thought to myself wouldn't it be awesome if my reverse just started to work? I tried it, and it went it. Not so softly, but it went in.

P.S. It used to go into reverse, but get stuck. Kind of like the car was in reverse and 5th gear together.

Well after reverse started working i put the two nuts back on top and tightened them. I went to try reverse one more time and it didn't work again. I think i found part of the problem but i don't know how to fix it. Reverse worked when the nut was off because the whole top section moved up when the bolt is on it won't go into reverse because the nut is holding it down. The one section isn't sliding up like its supposed to. I'll post pictures to show what i mean. The first pic its not in gear the second pic is in reverse.

Maybe the shift fork, shaft is bent. If they bend even a little they wont move smoothly or somtimes at all.

im having the same problem with my awd trans, it feels like its fully in gear but just grinds so i took the outer case off and with that case off rev works fine.... mine cant be the rails because theyre new, interlock and pin are both new.... with the case cracking open it will work in reverse..... with the outer case off there was some shaft play so what i'm going to do is order up some new shims and see if pulling out the shafts cures the problem. I'll finish pulling the trans today and let ya know if the shims do the trick. sounds similar to your issue.
