I have a 98 gst 5sp and all of a sudden my reverse stopped working. 1 through 5th work fine but it just will not go into reverse, even if the car is off it won't go in. It happened out of no-where too. I was driving my car one day, everything was good. The next day i get into it and try to back out of my driveway and it didn't go in. It doesn't even go in a little. Its almost feels like when you try to put your car from 5th straight to reverse, its like something is blocking it???

im having the same problem with my awd trans, it feels like its fully in gear but just grinds so i took the outer case off and with that case off rev works fine.... mine cant be the rails because theyre new, interlock and pin are both new.... with the case cracking open it will work in reverse..... with the outer case off there was some shaft play so what i'm going to do is order up some new shims and see if pulling out the shafts cures the problem. I'll finish pulling the trans today and let ya know if the shims do the trick. sounds similar to your issue.

With your problem it sound like the new fork shafts are a little different, so you may need to adjust the shifter cables.

Sorry I didn't read the part about gear shaft play! Sorry

I wish mine was only an issue with the cables, still have an inch of play.... and since ya mentioned the hub/slider inthe outer case, my outer synchro was chewed up on the inside where it goes over the outer case over the spring.... nothing really to do with anything but kinda messed up....

theres bout 1/8" play, maybe a lil less. the bearings themselves seemed fine. My press was stolen two years ago so i hope i dont have to mess with them. I'll try shims first, the trans doesnt have any in it anyway besides one.

When i took off the slider it was stuck to the top gear. They both came off togethor and were hard to pull apart. After i got the slider seperated from the gear i wiped it down of any dirt or small specs of metal and put it back on. After i got it back together reverse worked but fifth gear didn't go in. So i took it back apart, it came apart easy this time, and put the slider from my spare tranny on. I put everything back together and it worked!!!! All of my gears finally work! I guess it was a bad slider, it looked exactly the same as the spare one i put in. Or mabey there was some little spec of metal that didn't come off the first time? All i know is that everything works now. Thanks sooo much for all of your help jeremy19984g63. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong LOL.

sounds to me like it's comming from inside the tranny where the rev. gear is located. I want to say rev. operates on it's own. i know 1&2 are on 1 shift rail 3&4 on another and 5 is on it's own. the only way to fix the problem is to break it down. I've done it before but it has been quite a while so kinda fuzzy on the details on how rev. works. much easier take apart a FWD vs the AWD i played with. another alternative would be to try and find a used tranny to make the car good. keep the old and fix on your own time or not and sell the thing on the classifieds or ebay. note though that i am not insinuating giving up. i say pull it apart. more fun that way.
