Read me if you're running an inline filter on a journal bearing turbo!

WTF

If you've got stuff that will stick in that thing, you've got worse issues than an oil filtration problem.

I don't see why anyone would even need to use an inline filter anyway. It's not like the oil from the head or the OFH isn't already filtered. Also, the oil comes straight from an oil galley which is "clean/filtered" oil. It's not like it's picked up off the bottom of the pan and then thrown through the turbo before it's filtered.

This goes back to regular maintainence. Change your oil and filter frequently and you won't have a problem.

AMEN. Giggity.

I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this and it seems so unusual that a filter would add enough restriction to cause an oiling issue, but you never know. Thanks to everyone who has posted so far!

I don't think it's the filter that is causing turbo to smoke. I've recently relocated my feed line from OFH to head and my car started to smoke pretty bad at idle. Smoking only happens when I come to a stop. It seems like at idle there is lack of oil flowing through the turbo. I've switched my feed line back to OFH and the smoke problem was fixed. I just did this to see what will happen getting oil from two different source. This is without filter on 72mm turbo.

How is it that the turbo would smoke more from a lack of oil? That seems unusual for sure.

The other unusual matter is how these turbos I've mentioned above were dying with the filter in place....the 6031E was even fed from the filter housing at one point and it still died in less than 1k miles. The most reliable oil supply source we've used so far has been unfiltered, unrestricted, from the head.

Smokes when you come to a stop? Sounds like the VAC is causing oil leakage past the valve stem seals. I'd look into that.

It's not valve stem. Ex. Manifold is dry. After putting back my feed line to oil filter housing, it stop smoking. Weird, yes. It seems like there is not enough oil flow at idle from head. That's only thing I could think of.

I run a PTE SC6169 journal bearing with no BS and fed from the head with no restrictor or filter. It has over 6k miles seeing 30psi+ every day. There are no signs of play or housing contact with my turbo.

Just smoked my srb g60! It has less than 600 miles on it. TAKE OFF THE JUNK A$$ FILTER!!!!!!! It is not worth the trouble guys. I had it fed off the head as well. I will be calling Oliver at Slowboy tomorrow because he told me to run the filter.:notgood:

Just smoked my 50 trim. no BS, -4 line from OFH, no filter but was using a restrictor. Had it rebuilt and they said it looked like it was not getting enough or any oil!

Same turbo no oil filter or restrictor... 200 miles seems fine.

This is interesting. Talondave smoked his Turbonetics 60-1 fed from the head with the Earl's inline filter in a few hundred miles. The SBR G60 (his backup turbo) he's running now gave him most of last season and a couple thousand miles so far this year fed from the head with no filter, same shaft play as when it was installed.

I'm seeing a trend here.

Too much oil or improper oil drainage will cause the bearings to contact the housings and the shaft to contact the bearings, giving similar failure symptoms on teardown as little or no oil.

Keep us posted on how it holds up without the restrictor.

I've ran a PTE 50 Trim for thousands of miles with balance shafts -4an and no restrictor off the OFH.

I also ran it for a short time without balance shafts, everything else the same and had zero oil/smoke issues.

My Holset HX-40 will be fed from OFH, -4an, .065 restrictor, no balance shafts

FWIW

Not sure what size restrictor it was. I also found a piece of rtv in the OFH! I got mad oil leaks, now I am pulling the motor and redoing all the gaskets without using rtv.
That makes all the sense in the world.

Better blow out or replace your oil supply line while you're at it. Sounds to me like some of that wonderful RTV that everyone overuses made it's way to your turbo.

I must admit, I'm a little RTV happy. I've started to tone it down though. I just hope I don't have any running through my system.

Alos, are you saying that the oil pressure in the system is not enough to flush out any extra bits of RTV? The stuff is pretty soft, wouldn't the oil pressure just punch it through everything and have it end up in the pan?

Tom

Depending on where it's at the RTV may get shoved into the oil supply line and dam up at the 1/16" restrictor, all but stopping oil flow to the turbo.

Oil pressure may be near 100psi, but it's not enough to shove a 1/4" piece of rubber through a 1/16" hole.

So I've been wondering now that it's became clear that the -10 return line is not big enough and most likely causing the problems; so would it be safe to say that the earls filter is safe to use? I would like to run it so I know I'm getting clean oil but I don't want to take the risk of blowing my turbo. What's everyone's thought on this?
