Quick Tstat Question

Can anyone tell me real quick which way the thermostat goes into the housing? Rounded housing facing up or flat end facing up?

Drops in just like this. The jiggle valve (little rattling thing in the top of the thermostat) will go towards the firewall (at 12 o'clock if you look at it from the front of the car).

The jiggly valve goes up, not towards the firewall, no? Isn't that the weep hole for air?

edit - nevermind this is for a 1g and I don't know jack about 1gs. Maybe that's right for a 1g I'll hide in my corner now...

Jiggle valve. As far as I know, our thermostats only have this, and not a separate weep hole.

Yeah, the jiggly valve IS the weep hole. Same thing as far as air bleeding goes. As you know on a 2g the thermostat doesn't drop in vertically, but rather goes sideways, and so aiming that towards the firewall is the wrong orientation as it should go up.

OP has a 1g

It drops in from the top, and not from the side.

... on the Dodge 420A motor .... then the jiggle valve is at the "12:00" position ..(same as the "K" car 2.2L motors....). If there is no valve or weep hole, you drill a .050 hole in the flange to make your own weep hole..otherwise, you get a nasty airlock and burping doesn't help..

Mitzs motors goes in as pictured above-they drop in with the jiggle valve toward the firewall..

EDIT:Okey, he's right - late 7bolts did a snoozer mod with shoving the t-stat in sideways ... my bad...Saw a 2G set up the 1G way with a 6bolt where I got my info.

You do get some oddities like with FORD will place the T-stat in the upper radiator hose....

How about a little "cause and effect" of an upside down thermostat? I had mine in upside down and not with good results. Accident though

The thermostat only fits in one way when trying to put on the top housing it wouldn't bolt on..You can just drop it in and you will be fine..Its a five minute job if that..Also if your getting your thermostat at the local auto parts store, my suggestion is to buy two..I had this problem a couple years ago when my thermostat didn't work..The first second and third thermostat were all junk..And the fourth one worked just fine..And no they didnt refund my 12 bux for the 3 junk ones..Or maybe they did and just gave me a replacement..

Actually, it can fit in either way. Cause mine was just in upside down and it bolted right up

Really it bolted up backwards..I kinda want to try it..But at least now you know what correct way to drop in a thermostat..
