What would you say about me gun drilling my cams? I can run it on a lathe and rest at work, and we have some 16" long 7/16" and 1/2" bits i can drill them with. I was just thinking about the evo hollow cams and wondering about how this would work with our stockers. As this would be a free trial for me, im just wondering if it would weaken the stock cams too much, or if it would even have a benefit in performance.

I hope thats all. Hate to rebuild this thing and put it on only to do it again, which is why i ask. But thank ya

Yeah never lay a head face down on any hard surface. If you do always put card board under it. Not only does it bend valves but it will dent the aluminum if anything gets under it?

Less than .001" of wear on the valve stems, and they should wear before the guides do right? All the seats looked good and lapped in fine. No play at all with seals installed. I am thinking of picking up some springs and binning these old stockers. I know you hate the evo springs, but im thinking of getting them for their lightness. I dont plan to rev this engine much higher than stock but any little amount of power i can free up the better. Unless you have a better suggestion?

Not really, the iron guide is softer than the chrome plating of the valve stem.

Just get a set of BC1100 springs and run them with your stock retainers.

Dale so Messed up question..You ever heard of the 5 valve mits head off the older mits's..

And would one of those work on a 4g block? I think the blocks were 1.6l or something..I cant remember the engine code at the moment..

The only 5 valve head I can think of is the VW 2.0T, There maybe a Volvo head with 5 Valves....

The older mits head I can think of, is a 2 valve with a "Jet" Valve.. the Jet valve is used in the EGR system.

I beleive one of these motors was a deisel..I forget its been a while since I remembered what vehicle or engine code it was..I know it was like a 1.6l ish..It wasnt the 2.6 I know That..

Crap I wish I could think of the motor now:( :banghead:

Audi is the same as VW as far as the 5V goes, some subtle differences in the castings.

the toyota 4age blacktop motor has a five valve setup using three intake and 2 exhaust. google image search it. i wish mitsu had that. makes variable valve timing look like a joke or atleast in the car i was in it did.

dale is it common practice to go .020 over on the mitsu blocks? i never see .010 oversized pistons. any particular reason why?

Being that these are metric engines, it technically goes up in .5mm increments. .5mm is .0197" which rounds off to .020" and so on

When you bore a block, you want appox .003 left to hone. So tryin to bore .010 is about impossible.

So you bore .007, but if the block has wear of .003, you are trying to bore .004, or .002 from each side.

This also dose not take into account, factory machining tolerances, and core shift.

When I first got into doing machining, first over bore was .030 on a domestic block.

Darn if you did 30 overs then you are older than I though. just a joke.

On the reason of why not 10 over pistons, any small variation on cylinders or scratch marks would already take up that 10, just on taper I have seen 6.

FWIW we aim to bore to .001 under. Hone with coarse to about .000 and fine to .0005 over(generally add a little PTW).
