I know this is a really stupid question, but what is the purpose of a datalogger? Do you tune with it, or do you use it to just see whats going on in your engine and see when something is wrong? Should a datalogger be something you buy early on in modding, or later?

A datalogger allows you to basically see what your ECU sees. Its good for tuning, as well as diagnosing problems. I don't think I could drive my car without it...you get used to having it and can't drive without it. I can check/clear the check engine lights, and check all the basic functions of my car.

As for tuning, it is an indispensable tool. You log o2, RPM, IGN TIMING, etc and you can see where you are getting knock, pulling timing, running rich/lean, etc. I would recommend getting a logger as one of your first mods as it helps to figure out the problems you will get with your other mods.

ive been looking at wideband lately, and couldnt tell if a given wideband product would have datalogging capabilites, but does the wideband unit send the info to the ecu so that the datalogger will pick it up anyways? or would you have to find a wideband unit that is capatible with a datalogger?
