Pulling the head this weekend...Just a few questions.

Car is a 91 Talon NT FWD... ;-/


I'll have the head off, getting it remanufactured, ported, and polished ($500 er so).

Main question is, will the Cometic DSM Metal Headgasket (Which says its for Turbo cars) work on the non-turbo?? This sounds like a stupid question, i know.. but i am curious, since the thicker gasket is going to lower the compression ratio. I am pretty sure it will fit, since both turbo and non turbo engines are the same with the exception of internals. But my concern is the lower compression ratio. Will that have an adverse effect?

Also, since I'll have the head being remanufactured, should I buy higher quality replacement parts for it, or trust the machine shop that's doing the job to get the parts?
(I would assume best case is get the parts myself, which brings the next question)

If i get the internals for the head myself, what should I look for, in terms of quality / performance?? Will new stock parts be ok, or are there better options for performance, etc?


Also, while we are on the subject, will getting the head ported add enough (or any for that matter) power to make it worth it?

i see that you have an intake but no esaust if you have evry thing free flowing it would be smart to open the whole car.
the internals are fine no need to up grade uless you want to rev really high the only thing i would up grade would be cams and cam gears

thats kind of alot of money to invest in a N/A but if you like the car that much go for it.
As long as you have realistic dreams (15's-16's )
i dont forsee any issue with the head gasket - lower compretion ratio would add saftey if you want to run no2 .

How is $500 a LOT to spend on a NT car?? ;-)
I'll end up spending more than that by the time I get the rear brakes and the clutch replaced, and do some work on the internals of the engine.

If i were spending a grand plus for a NT to Turbo swap, sure.. I'd bite the nail and buy a Turbo AWD.. ;-)

BTW. I know this prolly sounds a lot like I am prepping the NT engine for a turbo upgrade, but not so. If the turbo cams, pistons, etc etc are strong enough to hold up to that kind of boost, they'd be almost failsafe in a NT.

I don't aspire to run a 10 second 1/4.. Hell, I don't aspire to run a 1/4 at all.
I'm more interested in running 130mph+ for a while, on long run racing.

I don't care about the pssst sound of a bov venting (but hearing a turbo spool is kinda sexy.. )

So what if a mustang beats me off the line. I just want a clean, reliable, fast car..

A few of the DSM's i've seen around here look like The Fast and Furious rejects. Back wings higher than the top of the car.. Neon green paint with flame strips, etc etc. They almost all sound like pissed off weedeaters when they get on the gas, but my daily driver (2004 Cavalier) will amost always beat them through an intersection off of a red light, which is mostly just reaction time, but hey...
