Im pulling the 6-bolt from my 97 gsx. Im pulling the motor and tranny together. I just wanted to know, do I have to pull the cotter pin and castle nut off and remove the axle. I dont see why this is necessary since I am not replacing axles. Is there a shortcut like removing a control arm or something along those lines? Cheers

can do like I did and drop the entire subframe, motor, tranny, xcase, all as a unit, but if your just taking the axle out yeah you have to pull the cotter pin, take the nut off, and push the axle out of the hub.

On my 91 talon awd. I merely took the rotor arm off the strut by the 2 bolts. Then let it sit free-standing and that gave me enough room to pull the axels out of the tranny itself. Then i pulled the motor and tranny as one. I took the trans case off though.

for the Passenger side:
Take the longer bolt out that holds the lower control arm to the car.

Then unbolt the lower control arm from the spring mount/arm above it.

The lower arm can now be pushed down (only connected to the hub now) and the axle can be wedged out of the tranny (from the top) with plenty of room.

for the Drivers side:
Its all the same PLUS you have to remove the 2 bolts holding up the carrier bearing. You can get at one from the passenger side and the other is a lil more tricky from the drivers side.

When you have that carrier bearing undone plus the lower control arm disconnected, you can grab that inner CV joint (so it wont pop apart on you) and pull the axle out of the tranny.

Any questions, let me know, I have pics too. :thumb:

Thanks so much for the info. I knew there had to be an easier way instead of pulling the axles out of the hub. pics would be VERY helpful. Did you leave the transfer case on or take it off? Again, thanks

Is there any tricks to getting the axles out. I cant seem to get them out.

the nut rusted to the threads didn't it? on the axle right? hopefully the splines did not rust together ether or your going to have some fun. i had to cut out my hub baring and axle so i could at lest save the knuckle because they rust welded them self's together. before that i took out the whole knuckle hub and axle assembly out together and put it in a press and put over 4 tons of presser on it and it still would not brake loose. it started bending the wheel stud plate like a taco i even had it glowing red while doing it with a torch=[ im lucky i got to save the knuckle tho. make sher all of you put some antiseze on thos splines and threads on the axle i hate to have any one go through what i had to.

My problem is I cant get the axles to disconnect from the transmission. Thats the only thing holding it in right now.

So you have the axles out of the hubs but they wont budge outta the tranny?

Heres how.. lift up the axles so they are absolutley level with the tranny output..then Pull in one go.. theyll pop out and youll fall down on your a$$ (like playinging tugowar ) LOL

Yeah I cant get the passanger side out. Had one guy pulling and another guy prying at the same time and it still wont come out.

Anybody got an tips on how to get this motor out. Everything is disconnected. Motor, trans, X case are still all bolted together. Running it to problem with not enough space to get the motor out. Dont have enough room on the left and right side. I keep getting caught up by the trans hitting the side of the engine bay and cant get it any higher.
