Hi, after the past 7 years with my dsm i have blown up over 10 transmissions. For the past 5-6 years i have really wanted to upgrade to a dogbox.

Well, last weekend i assembled a 1-5th gear PPG dogbox, with the center differential and a quaife front diff.

After my first shakedown ride i had a smile ear to ear! By far the best upgrade i have made to my lil race car. And i do drive this car on the street when weather permits. I know its hard finding info on this subject. So i thought i would throw my hat into the ring and say if you have been thinking about this upgrade, Do it!! Budget permitting of course..

We all know they arent cheap. But so far, i think it was money/time well spent doing this upgrade to my car.

One of the guys on the Galant forum has a pretty quick Talon that runs a stock 91 gearset which have been face plated by Liberty Transmission. It's not clutchless, but about as close as you can get to a dogbox without being the real thing. The perk here being; the face plated gears are much cheaper than a true dogbox. If I were serious about building a tough manual trans on a budget, that's the way I'd go.

Of course, If I had 5k + to dump into a transmission, I'd absolutely take the dogbox ;)

Spoiler Alert: He outruns the twin turbo Mustang pictured...

Yes i do wish i was able to do it 6 years ago. And yes they do break, more like wear out. But... I can rebuild the dogbox for about the same price as a evo3 trans. And a set of face plated gears wont help you if your tearing teeth of of them. It will jus let you shift faster. I havent really broken much in the way of shifting components.

My problem has always been tearing teeth off. PPG told me, if i shred teeth, they will replace them. But if i wear the shifting components out, thats on me and i can just put new dog rings and the gears with the dogs on them. I have been awd drifting my car for some time, stock trannies are fun when im on the street. But everytime im at the track, i crap a trans out.

If i had a 400hp rally car, faceplated gears would be my choice. My drift car make over 650hp and i clutch kick it like stompin tom plays guitar
