possible to leak water at turbo housing

okay so I have a water leak in the center turbo area...naturally I assumed it was the crushwashers for the feed/return water lines for the turbo...it's deffiantley the front side, making me assume it was the turbo water lines, even though I just put new washers in..sure enough it's still there with the new washers again.

This IS an ebay turbo, that I have bolted up untill I have my OEM turbo rebuilt..I know they're cheap, but is it even possible to leak in the area of the housings? Or is it more likely the extra water space/thread they have plugged on it?

You probably used the same crush washers that you took off correct?

If the answer to said question is yes. New crush washers is a must.

Never ran a eBay Turbo could leak if it leaks might want yo get a OEM Turbo versus stranded with a over heated engine.

Did your banjo bolt look cracked or anything? That's not too uncommon for the banjo bolt to crack and start leaking. Or have it snap off in the oil feed in the head.

If its just a temperary turbo just loop the coolant lines so they bypass the turbo. I havent ran coolant lines to the turbo for a few years now and has yet to cause a problem.

No I used brand new crush washers each time, I understand how the soft-metal washers, just like gaskets, squish into place upon being bolted down to provide the seal.


There's another threaded hole for both the water & oil, it comes pluged with it's own bolt & crush washer, looked tight so I didn't do anything to it out of the box..


My main question here though, is it even POSSIBLE for water to be coming out of the trubine housing itself? where it meets the compressor housing specifically.


does anyone else run a turbo without water for a daily driver?

The water in a turbo allows you to safely shut the car off even after very recently boosting. The water mass absorbs the heat instead of the oil left in the CHRA having to do it so as not to get 'oil coking' damage to the shaft.

Unless the casting is cracked then no, coolant won't leak from there. Just do a coolant system pressure test and see where it's coming from.

thanks for the help, I'm sure nothings cracked, because of me atleast since the whole reason I got this turbo was because I broke the smallest oil return bolt inside my old turbo, and couldn't get the helicoil to work

so i've been quite carefull with the bolts since..pretty bad mistake. But now I'm almost %90 certain it's this other 'plug' but the thing is, is I gotta take the water return line off again to get to it, which means I need to buy new washers now that I ran out of my supply. Worst comes to worst I guess I'll bypass the water supply

Why not just pressurize the system and spray soapy water around? Certainly pinpoint the exact problem...

Are you sure you didn't tighten it too much? Also that banjo bolt might be stretched and ready to snap. Do you have the right size crush washers?
