Possible turbo to o2 housing problems?

Well the more and more I tear into this motor, the more I find out how much of a jackass the previous owner was.

Ok so I found out my "16g" really just a godspeed is being held on by 2 bolts connected to the o2 housing. Its literally missing two damn bolts. I'm just wondering if this could cause issues such as a boost leak? I plan on replacing those bolts but I'm just curious if this could have caused anything bad.


So far the list of bad shit:

1. Belt sanded head
2. Extremely cheap head gasket
3. Missing exhaust stud
4. Turbo bolts missing.
5. Gaskets never been changed
6. Ebay 16g
7. Reused the head bolts
8. Mixed and matched bolts
9. Overheated once before me owning it and they failed to mill the head.
10. Old timing components and water pump

PS: There is so much wrong that its hard to find out what blew the head gasket

It could cause an issue such as an exhaust leak...

Specifically a pre-O2 sensor exhaust leak, which can cause inaccurate AFR readings used by the ECU (idle/cruise), also at WOT with your wideband (used by you, not the ECU, just for clarification

If you really meant "boost leak" and it's not a typo, here's a rundown for ya. A boost leak occurs on the cold side (intake, compressor, intercooler, etc...) of the system, as opposed to the hot side (turbine, o2 housing, etc...). Boost leaks happen when pressurized air, or boost generated by the compressor, escape the intake system before it is fed into the engine.

Thanks for the info, could this have caused me to run rich/lean? I always smelled gas inside and it ran pretty badly.

Definitely. The ECU would not be reading the correct AFR (O2 voltage) and would accommodate the mixture accordingly causing a rich condition, during closed loop (idle/cruise).

Well that should explain a lot, is there supposed to be a gasket in between the turbo and o2 housing? I believe some threads I read said there should be?

I couldn't find any at the autoparts store, would rtv be fine?

Yes, there should be a gasket between there.

You might want to pick up all the stuff you need as well (exhaust studs, bolts, etc...). They'll have what you need.

Alright! Thanks man! Hopefully this will be the end of the issues i'm facing. So far i'm 600 dollars into just a head rebuild... haha oh well its all in the name of making this car a daily driver again. Hopefully the ebay 16g doesn't crap out on me since i'm all stock.

No problem man. Yeah, things tend to add up quick when working on cars. The only thing that eases the pain is the joy you get from successfully completing a project and knowing that you saved a shload of money doing it yourself
