I took a picture of a possible oil leak in a car I was thinking about buying. I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to oil leaks and such so I wanted to see if someone could tell me anything from this picture. I was really interested in the car until I saw this. And I just want to find out how big of a problem this could be before I buy it. I have more pictures of the area if you need. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Edit: it's from a 97 GST

It looks to be comming from above the oil pan gasket, or right next to it. Possibly an Oil housing unit or for the oil filter. Its hard to tell where its comming from in the picture though. It seems to be a small drip so nothing quite major. Possibly a loose filter, or a failing gasket. Good luck man! :thumb:

It's a big job unless you're 100% sure it's this, but if you want, you can take all the crank pulleys off and check the crank seal. Even replace it if you're down there. But it's just a tiny drip, so if I were you, I would not do all that work. If it gets worse, do something about it. Until then, just check your oil periodically.

Soo buy the car? don't buy the car? Is this problem small enough that it really doesn't matter or could it be a bigger problem? or lead the bigger problems? That's my question. Should I still buy the car knowing that the leak exists?

Just do my one favor, can you take a pic. of you timing belt, just the top, were the cam gears are. I want it took look down. You must make sure your timing belt is alright, it could be soaked and the cover plate is holding it all in. I have it it happen before, not good stuff.:p
