what are the symptoms of a CV shaft going out.....my problem is when im at speeds above 40 mph when im only barely pressing the throttle and sometimes not pressing the throttle at all i can hear a sound similar to the sound your brake pads make when they are about out but its from under the hood. Also ive got a major performance loss it seems...i bet you a stock dodge neon could beat me off the line right now.....also when i turn my car off sometimes and it only does this when it wants i hear a clanking sound like a piece of metal with teeth is hitting something...the only thing i can think of is the starter being positioned wrong and its hitting the flywheel

please help

what are the main symptoms of a harmonic balancer when it goes out

it wouldnt cause a decrease in performance tho would it?

The clanking sound sounds like the Universal Joint Bearings are worn on the driveshaft. While holding the yoke try and turn each section of the driveshaft. If they move, there is most likely wear. This is just a start to find out your problems. Are there a lot of vibrations when your having this problem? :talon:

I'm not positive on this, but I think your right. I don't think you would lose performance if your harmonic balancer died. Although if your HB has definitely died, I highly recommend you get this problem fixed because your crank is gonna suffer from this. Think of taking a piece of metal like an old radio antenna and bending it back and forth until it breaks. That is essentially what is happening to your crank if the HB is dead.

I hope this helps :talon:

thanks man finally someone answers with more than 4 words.... ya im thinkin it is the HB cause i see it wobbling back and forth a jus a tiny bit.and i have to wait for my next paycheck in order to get the HB.no im not getting any vibrations at all so i know its not the driveshaft, already had that snap on me once.

No problem. If the problem persists after you change the HB let us know. Like I said I don't think(not positive) you should be losing power due to a dead HB.

If your 90 is anything like my 90gsx, you :)tease: might ;) ) have more than one problem right now.

A loose/rattling harmonic dampner may cause the primary noise that you're describing.

One possibility on the shutdown clank that would also explain your power loss at the same time is a problem with your catalytic convertor. Many times the catalyst substrate can melt and/or break loose from the casing internally. This will make some funky noises, and will also block your exhaust flow somewhat, robbing you of performance. A quick way to see if the substrate is intact is to gently rap the convertor case with the palm of your hand ( engine off, and exhaust cold), If you hear a rattle from the inside the convertor, further investigation will be required.

One of the best ways to narrow these kinds of problems down is to use a helper, to start and stop the engine while you play doctor. Try and find the general area first, and then narrow it down from there.

"as usual, this site is worthlessl"

Ummmm, :tease: this may not help you in recieving quality advice from knowledgable members...:nono:

if the balancer is bad and making noise. the knock sensor will pick it up and retard your timing. that will cause a performance loss.
