After reading all of the posts on changing the fuel filter I decided to do it myself and save me some money. Yall were not lying when yall said it was a bi*** and boy was it! I spent an hour and half trying to get that top bolt off and spraying the crap out of it with PB Blaster it finally let loose and my hand nailed the firewall. But it was ok since thankfully it finally let loose. Than came the bottom bolt. :barf: After spending in hour trying on that my dad comes home and I ask him if he wouldnt mind helping. It took him all of 30 seconds to get it off! Me and my scrawny self... :p Thankfully after spending 3 and a half hours working on this, we fired her up and no leaks. Hopefully it stays that way. When I took off the battery tray I saw 2 lines disconnected but I'm going start a new thread on that. Here's some pictures from the install.

You can see some of the PB Blaster running down the filter:

This is how I got that top bolt loose. Just squeeeeze together... :p :

And that bi*** of a bottom bolt:

changing the fuel filter on a dsm is probably one of the easiest matience related things you can do besides changing the spark plugs.. try changing the fuel filter on a automatic 95 kia sephia gs. took a couple hours to do. and my arms were pretty messed up afterwards.

Hmm, mine is to the right of the battery. under the intake mani. its braced to the firewall. is that the one you changed? i have a 92 n.t. im only 19 and have rebuilt my engine. this is why i dont have a turbo'd car yet. Just trying to learn before getting a tsi awd.

I think were talking about two different things LOL

I see. All im saying is it helps to take the battery out. Its only adivce to others.

=( The bottom one bolt kicked my ass tonight for 3 hours! I hope I'm loosening it and not tightening it. I'm pulling towards me from the passenger side fender...is this right? At one point I thought I had it, but it was just the bolt stripping! Anyone have any tricks or ideas that would help me? I've got the top one off and I've left the filter connected to the fire wall. Please help.

try pushing it away from you, but i think you're doing it correct :thumb: but just try to push away to see if it helps, and make sure you have the right size wrench lefty loosy righty tighty. left would be from under the car not ontop.

Why not break the bottom bolt loose by breaking the filter loose from the nut not the nut loose from the filter. I know it sounds the same but put a good wrench on the flare nut and use the nut on the top of the fuel filter and spin the fuel filter instead of the nut. Give it a shot, its worked for me in the past.

I will try it that way, I'm using a 14mm and a 19mm, I believe they are the right sizes. I think I sprained my wrist though LOL. This is harder to do than a turbo LOL.

Just imagine this, my dad used to be a mechanic do trannys engines you name it he's done it. He told me when i had to do mine he was like are you sure you want to do it? He then later :Dtells me when i ask for some assistance " this is why we used to paint them and tell the customer it's new" so watch out where you get your fuel filter changed!:D

I went to firestone and got a alignment done the other day. While I was there I asked how much it would be for them to change my fuel filter. The guy said, fuel filter-$23....Labor 3 hours=$150. I think I'll do this s*it myself this weekend.

It's really not that hard. Remove the battery and you'll have enough access to get down there. Once you do that, just take a 10mm line wrench and unbolt the bottom. REMEMBER! the bolt threads in upside down, so you should be turning towards the front of the car to loosen the nut! It's counterclockwise, upsidedown!

Yeah it's not too hard, I just didn't use the proper tools and ended up stripping the crap of the bottom bolt. Definately use a line wrench. I ordered and installed the STM kit, pump to rail. Noticable difference, I had to change my AFC -3%.

Took me forever to get this damn thing off.
