Old Grey, The Racecar

Well here is the latest of the "herd", a 1992 "racecar". It has been started, it's up to someone to finish it. Instead of going to a HAM Radio swap meet, I went to Topeka KS to pick up this "Gem". It's rough & missing parts.

The car came with a LOAD of parts, inside and out, so I will try to load the pictures up. NOTHING inside the car (except the door panels) is bolted down, it's just a storage shed. 😎
Thanks for checking it out!

Some engine pictures. It looks like a 92, 6 bolt, but I haven't looked for it's #'s yet. It DID start out life with a 5 speed. I had a auto starter plate and it will get a pilot bushing in the crank, as I am going to go auto with it. It even got its own engine stand. :thumb:
The PO was going to build it as a 2.3L but I am going to go 2.0L with more rpms. I will be looking for STD pistons, rods and maybe a crank. Let me know what you have! I better go check the bore.......:hmm:

I ripped the engine apart today so I could find all of the issues, and really, it's not BAD. If i could get #2 cylinder to look better, I'd leave it as a stock bore.

Made it to the end of the teardown. Took about 3 hours total with honing and tool cleanup and pickup.

Well I found a good deal on a set of rods/pistons that are 85.5 so I will do the right thing and punch it. Pictures when they show up ;)

My Pistons, Rods and an ARCII Box 📦 came in today! I won't say his name, but the seller is a super nice guy, as one of his children dropped the missing pin, so he ordered a new one AND a set of rings for me, so all I can say is I got a really good deal and met a really good man! Thanks "JL"! :thumb:
Here is what I got:
4 Eagle H Beam Rods
4 Weisco 85.5mm 9:1 Pistons
1 ARCII Box (like new)
1 Set (4) of used but good NGK Wires
1 New Wrist Pin (with the spiral locks, I hope)
4 Sets of 85.5mm Rings - New (coming with the wrist pin directly from Weisco)
I will be looking for other used but GOOD parts for this motor. If I can't find it, I'll buy it new, so fellas (and ladies), dig out your old stuff! Cams, Intakes, Timing Components etc. Remember, this is going to be "budget built" now that I am on a fixed income. 😎
Thanks for following,
Marty ✌️

I got ahold of my NEW machinist (my old one sold his equipment to this man). He can bore my block at the end of next week so dig out that old stuff you aren't using! I figured it would be a month out, at least.
Stoked.
Pops

I cleaned up the block today so it can go to the machinist and him not have to clean it to bore it. I will also ask if he has time to deck it. It also has a broken bolt where the halfshaft bolts to the block. Why does that fuker always break???? 2nd block I've gotten that had the same, outside bolt, broke off in the block. Dammit, dumbasses. :ohdamn:
This Block already has my "Mark" on it as it has an MW serial #, MW5088, bahaha.
All of my engines have an "MW#" on them. I think I'll just keep this one as is.
That last 2 shots are my buddy "Jeff". He was hanging out right outside the shop door and NOT HAPPY, 🤣
WARNING, SOME IMAGES MAY BE DISTURBING.......

Sad to see you have to burn the entire property down. That's the rule when you find a gigantic nope sized spider like that.

I'll start a GiveSendGo for you.

That is so true of 80% of people. I grew up on a farm and have my own now. They are good creatures but don't like to be fkd with. You will call me a lier, but here in KS, my ex wife and I saw a Tarantula the size of a paper plate, in the middle of the road. Shit, I turned around and went back for another look. She didn't care for that. It had hair on it that look like my arms. Cool as hell, and I thought my dad was just making up stories.
NOPE! That thing jumped from the middle of the hiway to the side in one mighty leap. We didn't have cell phones back then or we would all see a video! 🤣😎
I appreciate the "offer", that's a true friend!!! 😁

WARNING
Here is "Jeff", my shop security guard.......
You may not see him, but HE SEES YOU... 😎

Please do not try to steal or break in, as he will take swift action! 🤣

You can NOT post up crap like that without warning. LOL. Scrolling through pics then WHOAAAAA in larger than life on a big screen monitor. I will live and let live but I don't want spiders up close in my personal space.
arachnaphobia???......yes probably. I'm bringing a snake to your house.

I forgot about Jump Scare Warnings Paul 🤣 I have updated the post.

Yeah, I wouldn't really like it IN the shop, but around it, I'm ok.
Spooky 👻 looking ain't She???

He could stick around my shop any day Brian, and YES, less spooky.

I went out to the shop to prep the block and ready it for going to the machine shop. It was dirty, so a good wire brush and car wash were in order. I got SOAKED, as usual. ROFL
After drying and wiping all the machine surfaces with some ATF, I masked off the front oil passages and smoothed out the casting for easier oil flow to the mains, rods and head. I also wire brushed the water pump area. I will reclean it after it comes back from getting bored. 020".

I dropped my block off at the machinist today to have it taken to 3.370" (+.004"), to give me .004 PTW clearance. He is my new man and hadn't seen a 4g63 block before. He is going to deck it for me also. We talked about doing head work and he wanted to know if I had any junk aluminum heads that he could play with, since I need a RA50 or better finish. I do have, so I will drop it off any random day and he is going to try some new inserts that he got, but hadn't had any work that was aluminum. He is 30 minutes away, but I can do that any time, as he has a full time job as a setup man for a major big machine manufacturer in our area. I told him I'd just leave it and send him a message.
More to come, but I told him no rush.
Oh yeah, here is the crank. I am going to polish it and see what it measures out to. It had debris go through #3, the thrust bearing, but I can't feel anything with my fingernail, so I'm just lightly polishing and then I'll get out the micrometer. Crossing fingers 🤞

He sold out because he was getting older, and went to work for Cessna Airplane, here at our airport. All of his equipment went to this new man tho. He was needing health insurance and some retirement so I don't blame him. The new man seems very knowledgeable but it is a half hour drive, where my old guy was 5 minutes, LOL.

Ok Marty your photos triggered me to ask this. I have a question for your old school brain. I read keeping my crank laying on its side is bad for it and should store them vertically. I about had a heart attack cuz mine has been on its side for two years now. Does this apply to 4G63 cranks? It just doesn’t make sense to me the way they are designed it seems to me like they would be pretty balanced laying on their sides supporting their own weight if that makes sense. I don’t see how they could “warp”, but I’m obviously not well versed in that area yet. The new ones you buy off the shelf are laying on their sides albeit supported a little differently with the styrofoam. What are you thoughts? Have I ruined my OG crank? Also would this be different if I’m planning to line hone and have it balanced anyways?

It's ruined just mail it to me......
Nah, it's gonna be ok although my machinist does have a crank hanger, as do most shops. I'm just homebrew but good question. Put it in a block and measure it at the tip with a dial indicator as you rotate it. That's a true test. 👍
If you want to continue to store it, make 3 wood 2x4s with V's cut in them to support the front, middle and rear mains. Then no worries. If it's going to be balanced, it could be straightened. I've seen it on TV on a Ausie machinist channel somewhere. 🤔
