Well, I just bought a 1g and the first thing I started was an oil change. Well the redneck piece of work that had it before me cross threaded the oil filter and messed the threads all up. How do I go about fixing this?

Super pissed, if he can't even install an oil filter no telling what other gremlins I'm going to find. You guys will probably be seeing a lot of me in here.

Change the filter housing. You can get one from STM for $42 for a 6 bolt, $93 for Air Cooler oil filter housing, and for 7 bolt its $129 for an Evo 3 one. Im sure you can find a used one on here for around $30 shipped.

Depends on the oil filter housing. If it is a non-turbo or an air-cooled unit, you'll likely end up replacing the housing as stated above.

If it is a water-cooled oil filter housing, simply replace the stud that the filter screws onto as the stud itself can be removed from the filter housing and the o-ring between the cooler and the housing itself to replace the old and worn ring in there.

Edit: DOH! Too slow...

Exactly, I'm not sure how he did it. I guess when it started crossthreading he didn't look back and just torqued the hell out of it and it somehow sealed. Most cars just getting it hand tight will do the job, but I guess some people have to strangle hold everything.

I've got a line on a cheap local housing through a buddy, hopefully she'll be back up and running today.
