I fired up the GSX for another test and tune session on interstate 385 yesterday. I found a trail of something on the ground follwing me as I was backing out. Turns out it was oil. Im assuming the absence of balance shafts was able to knock not only the oil fliter loose, but also the part of the oil filter housing that the coolant runs though. When I got underneath the car, the big hollow bolt that holds the oil cooler on the housing wasn't even finger tight. Is it possible to put thread lock on this thing? FYI its a stock 98 GSX motor.

not a 90 style cooler. he mentions that it has coolant running through it and his profile shows a 98 GSX. i dtopped running water through mine after the performance shop it was at tightened the crap of the oil filter and crushed it.

I doubt just from having your balance shafts removed it would vibrate enough to do this. I had an oil leak on my 91 and got under there and found it was from that damn oil filter housing being all loose.

When you removed your balance shafts, did you port the oil filter housing hole?

I put a healthy glob of blue thread locker on my oil filter bolt before installing and then torqued it down to spec. I also safety wired my oil filter on to make sure it won't loosen.

Yep I did the same thing with the locker. Have not had a problem since. I also made sure to port the oil filter housing hole.

I know this thread Is old But I have a similar problem. My oil filter housing came loose on my old motor, put a new one in it, but with the same oil filter housing that was on the old car. I have just had it idling in my garage fixing any boost leaks, trying to get the car to run good again ect ect. Should I just take the bolt out on next oil change and put some blue locker and torque it down to spec again? Is their a way I can check to see if its crushed when the oil cooler is off? And about the washer upgrade, does anyone know a proper size/thickness to use? Thank you LOL

It's good you re opened an existing thread instead of making a new one :thumb::applause:

If you crushed the internals you would have coolant and oil mixing together. A way to be sure is to take it off and either put fluid in the coolant or oil side and see if it comes out of an area it's not supposed to. You could also pressurize it like you would for a boost leak test too but on a smaller scale.

Lock tite will work to help keep it on there. That's what I used when I put a new housing on.

What's this washer mod you speak of?

That dude. Seemed like he had the PERFECT idea and brovo to him but not on the thickness or size of the washers. I also have this oil cooler housing that came with the new motor. Its a 4g63 6bolt that was in a 2g car, here are the pics!!

I love my droid and photobucket app LOL. Posted like 18 pics today.

Anyways I could switch to that houseing maybe but the big thing that bolts to the back of the oil filter housing on my 92 oil cooler has no place in the new one. Im guessing this is the thermostat that measures the oil temperature on my 92 talon. If I do decide to put this one on (Which will be a PAIN to do) ill have to unbolt the timing cover ect ect and get a new gasket and I really dont wanna do all that unless I should just use that one and run no oil cooler at all. Ill have to plug the ports where he had a oil cooler and ill have to plug or bypass the lines to the old one which shouldnt be hard I dont think right?

Basically If anyone could tell me what all is involved and if I can just leave the wire to the thermostat unplugged or whatever Id greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys!!
