i have a 96 eagle talon with a new 6 bolt motor. the motor is a 90 and i forgot about needing the oil cooler. the mechanic that did my motor swap told me that you can just block the outlet and inlet on the oil filter housing. it ran okay. it had a lifter tap pretty bad so i shut it off and the timing belt came loose. it bent 15 valves so i pulled the head again. when i took the head to a local machine shop they told me my new 272 cams had grooves in them. theres what a gritty substance in the head which i dont know what it is. the machine shop said they sprayed a head that had shavings in it with wd-40 and it was almost the exact same texture. so im sure thats not good. so my question is could the entire problem be the blocked oil lines? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would say your (so called) mechanic just cost you a engine:notgood:. Blocking off the oil cooler fittings is a MAJOR NO NO. There is a thermastic valve (varatherm) in there when it is cold it lets oil bypass the cooler but when the oil gets hot 180+F the valve opens closeing off the passage between the two oil cooler passages shutting off the oil to the engine& overpressurizeing the oil pump putting a major strain on the timing belt.

For a 6bolt you have 2 options one more crude than the other. 1 replace the adaptor with a N/T unit 2 the crude way destroy the varatherm and put it back togther.

I would have to look at a 90 OFH & see the flow pattern when the Oil Temp Valve in a 90 OFH says "send Oil thru Cooler" but generally I'd say you're ####ed - & You DON"t have a "mechanic" & you don't 'forget' about an Oil Cooler.

i would have to agree. i was just seeing if that would cause all of these problems or not. it was done without my permission or knowing so he's agreed to do all of the work and pay for whatever parts are needed. he claims he was under the assumsion that he was blocking the coolant lines to it. but either way i would agree my internals are probably trashed. thanks guys.

If for sure it's a 90 housing they do not have a liquid to oil heat exchanger but if it is a 91> that's what they have.

i pulled the entire motor out of a 90 laser i used to own. so it's for sure a 90 oil filter housing.

THATs A NO NO. there is a reason it is on there. whats cooling the oil? if you are not going to use the oil cooler set up, use the watercooled housing. just imagine how hot the oil got. i am not trying to be gross but that is like putting a plug in you butt hole and not being able to take a crap. i would have a chat with your mechanic
