it will if you live in a smog controled state thats why i dont. around here no cats no smog junk none of that crap. but anyway it works and keeps out the dust and anything else that may be suck in from the hole in the egr. just my 2 cents worth.

Here's an idea, don't waste your money on an obx intake manifold ...our stock ones are just fine. Is anyone else still confused? This seems to be a rather simple concept to grasp for me, but I have no problems lending my technical wording expertise if needed hehe.

Also the filtering of the incoming "leak" air should be quite easy. As long as you have the head side blocked correctly, you're not dealing with hot exhaust gases directly and something as random as a cutout of pantyhose over the plate should suffice.

Do you think that panyhose will hold up to the heat of the IM?

I can see what you've illustrated, but our systems don't look much like that, so your diagram might end up confusing some of our newer members. Bottom line... block off the head and introduce fresh air leak between blockoff plate and valve.

That is the same technique me and Driggs have been describing, just not on a 420a EGR valve. Block off the exhaust port, leave the intake port open, draw fresh air in instead of exhaust gas. The air brought in through a modified EGR system would still be properly metered on the 420a.

That's exactly what I was trying to illustrate for those who could not picture it.... I just didn't have a clip of a 420a egr valve.

I just added the metering note for those who may try the modification on a non-420a or even a non-dsm.

Trust me, we appreciate the help very much. Pictures are always valued around here, it's just that the 4G63 EGR valve doesn't look anything like the 420A valve and I didn't want newer users to get confused.

I must be lucky. I just used my one block off plate in between the head and the EGR valve and I don't have a CEL. Didn't have to modify it or anything.

The actuation solenoid is what the ECU checks for, not the EGR function.

On 2gnt's, the ECU does also do a flow check to test for the presence/functionality of the EGR valve itself.

ok if i follow this diagram for a 1g (race only) http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198327&highlight=taboo+vacuum+diagram, can i remove all the vacuum lines accept the lines for the two on the egr valve. So the two lines from the egr valve will to go the thermal vacuum valve (stock form), but eliminate all the other lines???? ive read that an egr valve does more good than bad so i want to leave it on. thanks in advance

You will probably need to run from the thremo valve back to the TB too.

Hey DSM Kid, Whoever it is who gave you that advice should be shot.

Since when do hot exhaust gases help when they mix with a cool intake charge. All its dooing is raising the temperature of your intake temps thus not making the most efficent cool air. The colder the air, the more dense it is meaning more fuel, more combustion.

Its the same principle as Water/Alky injection, lower the intake temps and boom you can make more power and have a safer engine.

a proper EGR valve will help with fuel economy... I personally got rid of it because I already get crappy gas mileage and it cleans up the engine bay!

it may help with emissions, though my galant easily passed without it (flying colors, actually).

Nor do I believe that it does diddly with fuel economy on a good tune though. I was averaging 25mpg with the evo3 16g even when we were out on a run doing spirited driving for at least 1/2 the time.

given that I have seen around 28mpg on the freeway with just cruise driving, I don't think egr helps. I mean, the car is rated for 22mpg highway stock. [shrug]

keep in mind that economy was acheived with a flying brick of a GalantVR4, not the relatively slippery airshape of a 1g dsm.

As much as I like Defiant, and even though he's right much of the time, I think this is an issue that he's wrong on. I think it's a bit different when you've experienced a basically stock car, and then taken it to an extremely modified car. Simply a matter of perspective.

I've achieved 35 mpg w/ no egr valve. It probalby would have been better w/ the valve. BUT, if you can dirve w/ better habits and have a cleaner intake manifold/enginebay, it would be nice to do away with it.
