With the warmer temps finally coming, I noticed my hot oil pressure at idle is considerably lower than in the winter. I went ahead and took pictures of the stock gauge in my 92 talon TSI at idle, 1200 RPM, and 2000 RPM. Are these readings normal? I'm running Pennzoil ultra platinum 10w-30, car is fully warmed up, outside temp is 74 degrees.

this looks good. However, the gauge is not very accurate. To absolutely verify you will need to install a gauge. I would recommend that anyway if you plan to build this DSM>

My gauge reads very low even at 90 psi. At idle the stock gauge looks horrible but she has 22lbs of oil pressure, hot.
Don't trust the stock gauge.

I wonder, were they ever capable of actual good pressure readings representative of reality? I mean, as some our cars aged over 30 years, perhaps the sensor just becomes less accurate but new, from factory, were they ever useful beyond telling us, "yup, you have some amount of oil pressure, I'm just not sure how much"...
I've only ever had really old sensors because the first thing that went into each of my DSMs is an aftermarket. Mechanical the first time, then electric this time around.

Thank you for all the replies, I should have done a quick search and seen the countless other threads asking the same question, sorry my fault. Yeah I plan on hooking a mechanical oil pressure gauge temporarily to where the sending unit is, just to verify. Unfortunately I am one of those "interior must look stock" type of people. I wonder if the sending unit itself is inaccurate or is it just the gauge?

Yeah I have done that.
Maybe you can keep remote mounting a gauge somewhere under the hood or install a gauge in hidden place like in groovebox or armrest if you want to keep the stock interior looking. Old school, people used to do that back in the days.
Or If you would have ECMlink or stand alone ECU or some sort that allows you to log, you don't really need a gauge. You can monitor only when you need through a laptop or tablet.
