Hey, I have a few DSM cars and my 95 GST that i am almost done with that will make 400HP at the wheels, but even with the knowledge of building a motor my 1g N/A is making a noise that noone can figure out..

It is coming from behind or just underneath the Cam gears. it could be inside the head itself... It's not a belt squeel and as far as i can tell it's not coming from the belt at all... but it is in the belt vacinity...
The sound is consistant with the revving of the motor. It sounds like the most rediculous amount of lifter tick i have ever heard... but there's no way that's what it is.... or is it?
it's a loud rev tick that sounds like if you were to loudly purr like a cat and roll "r's" while speaking... (if that makes sense)... i know it sounds weird but that's what it's doing...

The noise coms and goes.. sometimes i can shut the car off and turn it back on and it goes away....

Could it be the hydraullic tensioner giving out and it actually be belt noise... i cant visually see any slap in it but you never know i guess...

Does anyone know what it could be? If more explaination is needed just let me know... It's not a huge issue, it's just embarrissing having a decent looking 1g and it sounds like crap....

Very well could be the tensioner crapping out causing the belt to flutter down in the timing cover where you can't see. Speaking of things hard or impossible to see have you looked to make sure none of the accessory belts are rubbing? Really hard to say without looking at it or hearing it . . . Have you pulled the valve cover to make sure its not the cam itself rubbing in the head? Or something stuck behind the cam gear?

The sound isn't constant... It's occasional... I changed the oil last week to see if it would help.. there was nothing in the oil..
I don't have a timing cover on the car... i bought it without one and i just haven't gotten around to putting one on yet...
Changed the valve cover seal and the spark plug seals this afternoon... the head looks to be in good shape... i don't know how to check valves though...

I have checked all of the belts. there are no rub marks on any of them..... the head is in good shape... the oil pump is visually fine.. the lifters are definately lifting oil (when i pull the oil cap off, little balls of oil shoot out when i rev) .... none of the pulleys are loose... the belt feels tight...
When the car isn't making the noise, it runs true and very good... It still runs good when it makes the sound but is very annoying and embarassing...

Just can't figure it out... maybe i'll post a video somewhere and then post a link in Tuners.. Don't know how to do that, but i'll try and do it sometime soon....

How do you know your head look good if you just took your VC off? just saying. Double check your tensioner, check your oil pressure, the clacking may be from low oil presssure (you said the lifters were shooting oil but to be 100% sure check!).

Then do a compression test to be 100% confident everything is ok engine wise. If one cylinder has lower compression add oil in the cylinder, goes higher then rings are bye bye. Stays low either ## valves or valve stems seals are leaking.

Let us know and keep double checking, you never know if you could have missed something!

Ha... Well by "it looks good" i mean all of the top end stuff... obviously i only did a visual check of the cams, rockers, lifters, springs and retainers... I'll check the compression and get back... She doesn't run like she has a bad cylinder... and the noise is too high in the motor for it to be the rings. (IMO)

Here's a question for you kmj 4g63t... If my valve stem seals are bad would that cause oil to leak through and build up on the valve and then when i start my car it would drain into the cylinders? Every time i start my car after it's been sittin for more than an hour, it blows smoke out the back for the first few minutes, then it's fine after that no matter how long i run it until i shut it of for another hour or so... without running any tests I kinda came to this conclusion about the burning oil and the smoke but not the noise.....
would this same problem cause the potential noise?
