So I bought a set of HKS 272/272 cams and AEM adjustable cam gears. I set up my degree wheel and found tdc with a piston stop. After checking timing on both cams with a dial indicator I found that the exhaust cam is about spot on to the cam card but the intake cam opens at 5 degrees BTCD and closes at 31 degrees ABDC. The cam card shows it's supposed to open at 6 degrees and close at 32 degrees. My question is would I advance or retard the adjustable cam gear 1 degrees?

You would advance 1 degree to advance the camshaft 1 degree. Be sure you are making one degree of adjustment, on some cam gears 1 line of adjustment is 2 degrees.

The advance/retard printed on the inner cam gear is in reference to what you want the camshaft to do, the outer part of the cam gear with teeth stays in place, so all you are doing is turning the camshaft and locking it into its new position. In your case, the camshaft will be 1 degree advanced.

Thank you! Does anyone know if AEM tru time gears go in one degree increments or two? Also now that I have the true timing verified can I adjust the cam gears to suit my needs for example to lower or heighten my powerband?

Degree the cam so it opens 0.040" when your engine is at whatever hks specifies. It doesn't matter which direction it's going, you are degreeing them to be in the right position.
Yea, degree them however you want, keeping in mind hks profiles are good at baseline. This is a pretty basic question and if you needed to ask, I'd probably just leave them be.
