Hey everyone, I've been searching the forums trying to troubleshoot this noise I get on start-up but no dice so far. The sound doesn't appear every time, it usually appears after I've been driving for awhile turn the car off hop back in and start it again. This problem isn't consistent but it's getting more frequent. The sound is hard to explain so I'm posting a video, hopefully one of you guys has heard it before my friend who had a 1g GST said his made the same noise but he never fixed it.

95 Eclipse GST

Following the noise I get a rough idle for 30 secs max until the engine smooths out by itself. The noise only lasts about 10 secs during start-up then doesn't reappear.

Initially, I thought it was the alternator belt so I tightened it and it's still happening probably every 4-5 starts.

I'm thinking maybe a pulley bearing, or from what I've read the ps pump may be leaking onto the alternator but I checked the area and didn't see any fresh leaks. I'm not sure if the starter is a possibility as the sound seems like it's coming from the belt section on the driver side but I could be wrong.

My car is a 95 GST with 120,000 miles all the belts were changed at 80,000 with OEM mitsu belts. Thanks guys

You show that you did a belt at 80K.

Does that include replacing the two idler pulleys along with the WP?

If not, it could point to one of the idler pulley's bearings have spun their grease out and howling on you at the startup.

Easy test which includes taking the belt off is to hand spin the two pulleys. If they spin without any resistance, they're toast and needs replacing.

Good luck - DSM

@Atuca yo check it out! Just so you don't think I was bullshitting you on the rough idle start. Don't follow the video link though, it links to something entirely different now.

Btw anyone else reading this, replacing my starter solved everything.

Edit: Holy thread revival batman.
