Car is:

98 GST
5 speed
Spec clutch

Bought not running, ive fixed that all up. The car is on jackstands at the moment WITH THE WHEELS off. The car has sat for several months before I got it, and several since then.

It does not make this noise when its in neutral, AFAIK it only makes it when its in gear and it doesn't matter what gear. It shifts fine and clutch pedal is fine, ive shifted it into gears on the stands and they all engage correctly.

So. Is this related to the fact that the wheels are off (rotors?) or how the axles are oriented without load?

The trans has fluid, and the axles seem fine based on visual...meaning no rips or tears and they are in the trans firmly.

Help!

Put the wheels back on and leave the car on stands. Put the tranny in neutral (engine off) and spin the wheels by hand. Get someone to hold the steering wheel full right and full left, that will make it easier to pinpoint issues like a bad CV joint. Or if you are lazy you can spin the hubs with a pry bar. Do install the lug nuts first so you won't hurt threads on lug studs.

Ive learned two things.

1. Don't put the car through the gears without the wheels on.

2. Try simple stuff before I POST.

I had a burr to go an try it last night, put the wheels on and no more noise. Must have been rotors or something. IDK. Still highlights the transmission fluid needs replacement :(

Thanks!

Do pay attention to the drivetrain. When a CV axle starts to go bad it will start clicking during sharp turns.
Just though of something else: you could have some slack in the drivetrain (between gears, in CV joints, that kind of stuff) and wheels act sort of as dampers and their added mass absorbs the noise.
