I tried searching and couldn't find anything similar to my issue.

So I recently replaced my 97 Eclipse GST passenger side axle and the car was good. I noticed a noise coming from the passenger side after a few days and I just got a chance to look into it. With the car on jackstands (front tires off the ground) I put the car in gear and get a clicking noise from I side the transmission. I don't believe this is an old issue. So before I tear it apart (again) and inspect the end of the axle is there anything it could be?

All bolts were torqued and are still properly tight.

some of the new axles do not come pre greased. it could be your issue
Removed the boot clamp and it has grease. Double checked and the transmission fluid is nicely topped off. Noise sounds like it's coming from inside the transmission like it's skipping teeth on the axle but I have no loss of power and it's a deep sounding rattle/clunking. With the car in gear on jack stands I can stop the passenger side wheel and the driver side will spin faster but I only hear the noise when the passenger axle is spinning.

Here some photos of the old axle next to the new axle prior to installation. Old boot was torn, no idea how long. Opted for a new axle to be on the safe side instead of a rebuild.

Axle is out. Photos of axle seal and video of turning driver wheel. No noise noticed. What are the chances the axle seal is set too deep and the shaft is contacting some internal transmission parts?

the axle seal does look like is in too far, but I dont think it would cause any noise.

did you remove the abs ring on the new axle before you installed it? you should be able to knock the ring off of it with a hammer and screw driver

I think I found the problem. The axle I got is for a 2g GST Spyder. It wasn't listed as such but I was looking around and O'Reilly's shows the GST and GST Spyder have different part numbers. I guess that's what I get for trying to be budget friendly.

Can any confirm? I ordered a GST non Spyder one and I will find out tomorrow.

I removed the seal and test fit it not as deep. It still makes a noise so I don't think that's it. I have a feeling the spline tolerance isn't correct? I discovered this is a GST Spyder axle. Not a GST hatch back one.

I didn't remove the ABS ring it wasn't causing any interference.

A GST and a GST Spyder will use the same axles; they use the same transmission so there’s no reason they wouldn’t. These have 27 splines on the transmission side.

A GS Spyder (non-turbo) will use different axles, with only 25 splines on the transmission side, making them non-interchangeable with the turbo versions.

The only difference between axles is ABS vs non-ABS. The 2g GST and Spyder (turbo) are the same part numbers.
Non-ABS = MR165588 (alt MR430502), With ABS = MR165590 (alt MR430504)
