I have a 99 GST. I bought it and 2 days later it jumped time. I have since then, rebuilt the head, replaced turbo, intercooler, piping, fuel injectors, downpipe, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.
Here's the specs-
14b turbo
Sidemount intercooler - aluminum piping
HKS Bov
450 cc injectors
Fuel lab FPR
DSMLink v3
255 LPH fuel pump
Stage 2 clutch
272 Cams

So here's the problem. I got the car all put back together and it still wouldn't start. I got a crankshaft CEL. So I replaced the sensor and that fixed it. But then I was getting backfires. I switched the spark plugs back to stock (it was reversed because of having a 95 ECU). It then ran beautifully and idled. Twice I got a 0340 and it wouldn't run. I would clear the code and it would run again. That was 2 days ago.

Today I try to start it up and it would kind of start and then die off. I was getting an 0340 again. I find out that the ring that the CAS reads was flipped 180. So I flipped it. Still didn't run. I noticed a ground wire that was not connected. I reconnected it. Now, I try to start it, and I lose connection to DSMLink and it stops cranking after a second. My battery is testing at 12 volts.

Any ideas would be helpful. Should I blame the ECU?
 
What engine is in your car? 6 or 7 bolt? if its a 6 bolt, who did the swap? Did you add the dsmlink after you rebuilt and put it back together? The reason I ask is I have a 98 gst with a 6 bolt swap and 95 ecu. It has a 10k pot mod to fool the ecu so I don't get a misfire code. It is to my understanding you no longer need the pot mod if you use the link. Don't know if it applies to your setup or not, that's why I ask.

It's a 7 bolt and dsmlink was installed when I bought the car.
 
Check that your ignition switch isn't bad, or going bad, also there is a way to visually check out the ecu ( leaky capacitors and such) if you use the search on here you'll find some threads on inspecting these things. I'm new here myself, but I know I've seen several threads within this topic, hope it helps
 
The lose of connection and power ended up being from a weak battery. Got it charged up but still getting 0340. However, I was testing my spark plugs and the coil pack for 1 and 4 is extremely weak. I believe that is my problem.
 
Check the ob2 plug , link only needs 4 wires to operate ones + ones - and the other 2 are for data transfer. I forget what pins off the top of my head you will have to look into this.

If your getting power and ground at the plug and the other 2 have a connection back to there respective ecu pins I'd say it might be inside the ecu.
 
UPDATE: Replaced the coil packs.

Still not getting spark on cylinders 1 and 4. I also keep throwing a 0340, but not until after a while of cranking. Still looking for ideas :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

EDIT - Already replaced the sensor and the wiring looks fine.

Do you have access to a noid light? If you need a hand pm me. There is quite a bit you can do with a multimeter to start ruling things out.
