Its the skidplate. What you see is just the tip of the iceberg. It protects the entire underneath of the engine compartment.

It was fabricated from scratch starting w/ sheet of 1/4 inch aluminum, bending leading edge up to protect bumper and intercooler, holesawing some ventilation holes, trimming sides for A-arm travel, drilling mounting holes and vent for atmospheric wastegate discharge out the bottom.

Wow, 1/4 is pretty beefy for a skidplate. We mainly use 1/8" skidplates with reinforcements to reduce flex. I've seen WRC skidplates even thinner, but they have webbings machined on the skidplate to reduce flex.

Buffum used a 1/8 skidplate on the old U.S. Hyundai Rally Tiburons. They ran aluminum angle on the bottom of the skidplates to give them some rigidity while saving a ton of weight.

Anyone have any pictures of 2G's? I searched dsm rally on google images and found some great 1G shots.

Not many 2Gs ever built. Suspension design sux and maybe people afraid of crankwalk. But, this would be the most famous of the couple in N America. Run first by Yves Barb, then Losiers, now someone else.

DSMs ARE TOO PRETTY TO RALLY!!!!

haha, totally kidding. I love how our cars can be tuned to do anything AMAZINGLY. 1000 horsepower giant turbo drag cars, amazing handling circut/time attack, small turbo quick spool auto-x, top speed land records, AWD to RWD conversion for drifting, and RALLY MONSTERS..

Thanks Mitsu :D

Anyone else running a auto transmission for rallying?

I have been testing this for a few months now and it works great!!!

I'm running a Foreign Muscle chip in the TCU set at 7200rpm full line pressure in power mode and manual shifting full line pressure in ECO mode. All I have to do is just steer, throttle it and brake. No more shifting :thumb:

The shifts are extremely fast and solid. In the tight slower runs I will run the gear selector in 2nd to keep it from up shifting to 3rd. When I come onto a long straight I will up shift to 3rd then back down to 2nd when getting back to the tight slower areas.

The car works extremely well in the dirt and snow. This has been by far the funnest DSM I have ever owned.

My low dollar mod list...

FP exhaust manifold
EVO III 16G
550cc/min injectors
Devils Own meth injection (still running the stock SMIC and piping)
Foreign Muscle TCU chip
ECM Tuning Management
Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 tires
John Deer Hygard trans fluid

Anyone else running a auto transmission for rallying?

Uhm, nope. A few exceptions throughout rally history but 99.9% of rallycars are manual. I am one of the few who has rallied in a automatic car though, the Toyota Prius when they were originally launched. More to prove they were reliable than they were competitive.

Any rally-age in AZ? Preferably PHX area? I am thinking about a second 1g AWD to build for rally.

Rally Racing News — North America's Source ...
A very good resource.
(click on latest news, the 2010 calendar will be one of the first things you see)

Look on the calendar, it provides a very concise list of RA, RA regional, USRC, CARS etc. 2011 calendar will likely be available shortly, but every year is very similar to the one before.

Check out Prescott Rally in Prescott Arizona. There is a RA southwest regional that fits your location as well, as well as the California Rally Series (CRS). You have quite a bit of options for your area.

Sweet I'll check it out, got out and played w/ a local group here, once they get the vid ocmpleted ill post it up here and show some rally love!

This is awesome. I'd love to try some sort of Rally/RallyX, but the thought of cracking my 2GB Talon bumper..it just makes me cry inside. Hm, maybe I'm going to have to buy a 2GA bumper to put on for track days and whatnot..

It was! Next time I will have new better tires instead of lo-pros and will whip it around more and hammer on it.
