What some people don't recognize it that 1ge DSMs were top of the foodchain cars to have in both Open class and production GT classes in N America for several years. Yeah, there were turbo Audi Quattros, a couple Ford Cosworths, some graymarket JDM WRXs and Evos, ...but for anyone on a budget the DSM was the obvious choice.
DSM was never topdog in dragracing; no import was. And in roadracing, AWD and traction rarely ever mattered and most any 2wd car had a weight and less stuff to break advantage. Those motorsports have dedicated forum, yet rally were these cars regularly won events and the Production class (GT) in the US and Canada does not.
Popcorn anyone?
These guys sponsored by one of first microwave popcorn companies and were always handing out freebies at rallies.
